Women's Volleyball Splits Pair of Matches

HAVERFORD, Pa. (September 4, 2009) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team rebounded from its first loss of the season, defeating Widener University, 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-23), in its second match at the Haverford Tournament in Haverford, Pa. Earlier in the day the Ducks fell to Frostburg State University, 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-23). The Ducks are now 3-1 on the season.

Junior outside hitters Sarah Byrne and Maggie Majcher helped pace Stevens offensively, with Byrne amassing 31 kills, while Majcher finished with 17 kills in two matches. Freshman Maggie Kowalska continued to impress in her first season with the Ducks, adding 14 kills and six blocks to her season tally, while junior setter Sara Budar collected 62 assists.

Stevens wraps up play at the Haverford Tournament tomorrow, with matches against tournament host No. 24 Haverford and St. Mary's College of Maryland at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.

Stevens 3, Widener 0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-23)
After suffering its first loss of the season with a defeat at the hands of the Bobcats, the Ducks offense came to life in the nightcap, hitting .303, .333, and .294 in the three sets against the Pride. Byrne and Kowalska would key the Stevens attack, with 20 and nine kills, respectively, while Majcher finished with six kills. Senior Laura Johnson, and newcomers Brittany Fuller and Michelle Plotzker chipped in with four kills apiece, while Budar added 42 assists.

Kowalska and Majcher also pitched in defensively, with each totaling 10 digs, while sophomore Kate Janes added nine digs. Fuller upped her team-high block total to 21 on the season with four blocks in the Ducks' win.

Frostburg State 3, Stevens 0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-23)
Byrne and Majcher led Stevens offensively against the Bobcats, with 11 kills apiece, while Kowalska finished with five kills and three blocks. Byrne also added a team-high 14 digs in the loss, while Budar collected 20 assists directing the Ducks' attack. Junior libero Julia Reilly tallied 12 digs in defense.
