HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 6, 2009) – Sophomore forward Jenera Quinones (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) was able to convert on a breakaway opportunity 1:05 into the second overtime period as the King's College Lady Monarchs defeated the No. 15 Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team by a score of 1-0 in the Stevens Field Hockey Invitational at the De Baun Athletic Complex on Sunday afternoon. Stevens had won its previous three overtime games and falls to 2-1 on the year. King's, who fell to Juniata in overtime on Saturday, improves to 2-1.
The first half saw a lot of back and forth as each team had several strong chances. Early on, the Ducks got several good looks, missing just wide with several attempts from the top of the circle. Later in the half, King's generated two great scoring chances on two penalty corners, but Stevens' junior goalkeeper Ellyn Griggs was up to the task, making three saves during the sequence.
King's held an 8-5 edge in shots after the first 35 minutes as each team took three penalty corners. Griggs was credited with four saves.
The second half saw the Ducks control much of the action and possession as they allowed just one King's shot attempt over the final 35 minutes of regulation. Stevens got off five shots in the second half but had trouble finding a clean look as the Lady Monarchs played strong defense all afternoon.
In the first overtime period, King's threatened early, taking four quick shots, two of which were stopped by Griggs. The Ducks were able to swing the momentum in their favor over the final 10 minutes of the first overtime, once again just missing on several opportunities. The Ducks held a 5-4 advantage in shots in the first overtime and took three penalty corners compared to two for King's.
Stevens controlled the ball early in overtime number two, but King's quickly gained possession after a Stevens turnover. Quinones streaked down the left sideline, angled into the circle, made a move, and sealed the win with her second goal of season.
Griggs took the loss in goal despite a very solid performance. She was credited with six saves. Senior Kari Leach (Milford, Pa.) got the win in net for the Lady Monarch's, making three saves over the final 26:51 of game time.
Stevens ended with a 15-14 edge in shots. The Ducks also held a 13-3 advantage in penalty corners but had trouble generating many scoring chances on any of them.
Stevens returns to action against Kean University on Saturday, September 12. Game time is slated for 6 p.m. at the De Baun Athletic Complex.
