Wrestling Goes 1-1 in Centennial Conference Tri-Match

WESTMINSTER, Md. (January 24, 2010) – The Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team went 1-1 in its Centennial Conference opening tri-match on Sunday at McDaniel College in Westminster, Md. Stevens opened the day with a win over Washington & Lee University, 39-12, but dropped the nightcap to host McDaniel, 22-13. Sophomore Ryan Bridge, sophomore Joe Favia, and freshman Will Sharkey each went 2-0 for the Ducks as they move to 3-6 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial Conference.

Match 1 vs. Washington & Lee
The Ducks fell behind 5-0 after the first bout at 125 lbs., but freshman Ryan Neugebauer got a win by forfeit to put the Ducks on top, 6-5. Following a loss at 141 lbs., Bridge got his first win of the day when he pinned junior J.P. Welch (Richmond, Va.) 2:19 into the first period.

The Generals tied things up with a decision at 157 lbs. but Favia came back to earn a 12-6 decision over junior Keith Jaworski (Fairfax, Va.) to give Stevens a lead (15-12) they would not relinquish. Sharkey, wrestling in his hometown of Westminster, Md., made it 21-12 Ducks when he pinned senior Eric Veres (Columbia, S.C.) 2:58 into his match.

Junior 184-pounder Vincent Termini got a win by fall 32 ticks into the second period over freshman James Williams (Columbia, S.C.), and senior Ernie Guaimano made it three-straight falls for the Ducks when he pinned senior Richard Knack (Woodbridge, Md.) at the 2:34 mark of their bout.

Senior heavyweight James Roarty made the final 39-12 as he took a forfeit at 285 lbs.

Match 2 vs. McDaniel
McDaniel took control early, going up 13-0 with wins in the first three bouts. Bridge earned a hard-fought decision (2-1) over junior Brent Lowe (Dumfries, Va.) to get the Ducks on the board, and senior Charles Favia made it 13-6 with a decision over junior Matt Peters (Annandale, Va.). Joe Favia followed with a major decision over freshman Tony Vorndran (Millville, N.J.) at 165 to make it 13-10, and Sharkey knotted the score at 13 with a decision (6-4) over freshman Scott Forrester (Manchester, N.J.).

That however would be it for the Ducks as the Green Terror won the final three bouts of the day.

Stevens will return to action at a conference tri-match hosted by Muhlenberg College on January 30.
