HAMPTON, Va. (January 8, 2010) – The Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team defeated second-seeded Anderson University (S.C.) (NCAA Division II), 21-18, on Friday afternoon in the American College Division at the 30th Annual Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va. Stevens got pins from freshman Ryan Bridge and sophomore Joe Favia as each squad won a total of five bouts. The Ducks will now face Nassau County Community College on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the semifinals.
The Ducks fell behind early as the Trojans got a decision at 125 and a pin 133 lbs. to go up 9-0. Junior Kyle Brisson got Stevens (1-2) on the board in his first match of the year with a 3-1 decision over freshman Melchisedac LaVergne (Lake Charles, La.) and Bridge followed Brisson's win by pinning junior Chris Francis (Columbia, S.C.) 2:05 into their match at 149 lbs.
Anderson's Jonathan Jackson (Lake City, Calif.) earned a hard-fought decision (4-1) over senior Charles Favia to give the Trojans a 12-9 edge, but Joe Favia put the Ducks up for good with a big pin of freshman Tobias Henry (Orlando, Fla.) at the 5:37 mark of their match in the 165-lb. weight class.
Junior Bobby Bishop continued to wrestle well and put Stevens up 18-9 with a 9-4 decision at 174 lbs. and junior Vincent Termini earned three team points with a 3-2 decision over senior John Hamrick (Greenwood, S.C.) in the 184-lb. weight class.
Anderson got wins at 197 and 285 but it was too little too late as the Ducks held on for the 21-18 win.
