HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 13, 2010) – Junior back Anthony Roden recorded the equalizer 7:47 into the second half as the fifth-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team played the United States Merchant Marine Academy to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday night at the De Baun Athletic Complex. Stevens gave up its first goal in 13-plus games to end a scoreless streak that lasted for 1,333:07 of game time.

Stevens generated the first good scoring chance of the night but Merchant Marine (7-1-4) goalkeeper Gary Poulin (Hauppauge, N.Y.) made a horizontal save to keep the game scoreless. Senior Michael Quijano lofted a perfect corner in front and Roden was able to get a solid header attempt on net.

The Ducks continued to push, outshooting the Mariners 11-3 in the first half and 23-4 for the game, but King's point was able to record the first goal of 2010 against Stevens in the 39th minute when sophomore Cody Kessler (Delmar, N.Y.) split a pair of defenders in the middle of the field, angled right and beat Stevens goalkeeper Zach Carr with a tracer into the lower-left corner of the cage. Carr who had been in goal for every minute of the Stevens scoreless streak, is now second all-time with 1,333:07 consecutive shutout minutes behind former Drew University goalkeeper Peter Boyer. Boyer had 1,428:00 minutes of scoreless soccer, which is a record across all three divisions of the NCAA. Carr is second in all divisions.

Stevens took USMMA's best punch and was able to draw even early in the second. After a Mariner foul, sophomore Zach Adler lined up for a free kick on the right side, about 30 yards out. Adler lofted a beauty and the athletic Roden was able to direct a clean header in the right corner for his second tally of the season.

Just 4:59 later, Stevens nearly pulled in front when senior Nolan Sandberg was able to get some space and slice in front of the mouth of the goal with the ball. The veteran than stopped on a dime, and laced a shot that deflected off the cross bar and out of bounds.

Stevens continued to dominate the ball but could not find the game-winner and had to settle for the draw. The Ducks had the only quality chance in extra time and it came in the final 60 seconds. Sophomore Victor Daza had the ball on the left side, 15 yards outside the penalty box. He fed Sandberg who split a pair of Mariner defenders and shot wide left.

In addition to their monster shot advantage, the Ducks held a 5-1 edge in corners. Carr made one save in goal, and Poulin played well for the Merchant Marine Academy, recording nine stops on the night.

The Ducks are now unbeaten in their last 27 games at the De Baun Athletic Complex and will put that streak on the line against Empire 8 rival Elmira College on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. The Soaring Eagles, who are currently at the top of the conference standings, defeated the Ducks 2-0 when the two teams met in 2009.
