Rutgers-Newark Upsets No. 3 Men's Soccer, 2-0

NEWARK, N.J. (October 19, 2010) – The third-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team fell to Rutgers University-Newark, 2-0, on Tuesday night at Alumni Field in Newark, N.J. With the loss, the Ducks drop to 9-1-3 on the season, while the Scarlet Raiders improve to 10-6-1 overall. The game-winner came from sophomore Jervis Witherspoon (South Orange, N.J.) with 1:27 to go before halftime.

Stevens ended the game with a 13-12 edge in shots and an 8-2 advantage in corners but were unable to score one game after the Ducks put in five tallies against Elmira College. Six of the Ducks' 13 shots were on goal, while the Scarlet Raiders put a total of five on net. Senior goalkeeper Zach Carr made three saves for Stevens. Senior Matt Zielyk (West Orange, N.J.) and sophomore Jonathan Frances (Chandler, Ariz.) split the game in goal for Rutgers, each making three saves.

Witherspoon's tally was unassisted and came at the 43:33 mark, and 13:09 into the second half, senior forward Robert Campos (East Brunswick, N.J.) gave the Scarlet Raiders some breathing room. Junior Mike Trenard (Northfield, N.J.) took the ball deep in the left corner and Campos was able to head in his cross.

Stevens' best chance came when sophomore Zach Adler drilled a post late in the second half. Adler, who took seven shots, put five on goal.

Stevens will return to action on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. with a game against Empire 8 rival Alfred University. For those unable to make the trip to Hoboken, all the action from the De Baun Athletic Complex can be seen live at www.PennAtlantic.com.
