Women's Tennis Scores 9-0 Sweep Of Utica

HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 2, 2010) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team captured its seventh-consecutive dual-match victory, dropping just three games in a 9-0 sweep of visiting Utica College at the Stevens Tennis Courts in Hoboken, N.J. The Ducks, now 8-1 on the year, improved to 4-1 in conference play with the win, while the Pioneers fell to 0-6 on the season with an 0-6 record against Empire 8 opponents.

Stevens freshmen Elena Cocineva-Lenge and sophomore Alexandra Handel put the Ducks on the board with an 8-0 win in third doubles before juniors Morgan Scalzi and Mine Bese made it 2-0 with an 8-0 shutout at second doubles. Senior Kendra Appleheimer and freshman Lisa Tessitorerounded out doubles action with an 8-1 triumph in the top slot.

Appleheimer kicked-off singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 3 singles, before Tessitore clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-0, win in the second spot. Handel then ousted her Pioneer counterpart, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4 singles, before sophomore Victoria Tran recorded the Ducks' fourth-straight singles sweep in a 6-0, 6-0, win at sixth singles. Cocineve-Lenge scored a 6-1, 6-0, victory at No. 5 singles to make it 8-0 Stevens before senior Allyson Kingman wrapped things up with a 6-1, 6-0, win in the top slot.

Stevens returns to action on Sunday, October 3 against Empire 8 rival Hartwick College.
