NEW PALTZ, N.Y. (October 20, 2010) – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team had its five-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday afternoon as SUNY New Paltz downed the Ducks by a final of 1-0 at Turf Field in New Paltz, N.Y. The Hawks received a goal from freshman Alana Costenbader (Whitehall, Pa.) with 16:12 remaining in the game to seal the win. Stevens falls to 7-8 on the season, while New Paltz is now 8-7.
In the first half, the Hawks had an 7-2 shot advantage and out-cornered the Ducks 7-3. Stevens' senior goalkeeper Ellyn Griggs was credited with four saves in the opening stanza, while Antonija Pjetri (Suffern, N.Y.) had to make one stop.
The game-winner came 19:48 into the second half as freshman Alyssa Finck (Morris Plains, N.J.) put the ball in front from outside the circle and Costenbader was there to poke it passed Griggs.
New Paltz ended the game with a 13-5 advantage in shots and a 13-10 edge in corners as the Ducks were unable to convert on any of their seven second-half attempts.
Griggs finished with a total of two saves and Pjetri finished with two. Stevens freshman Katie Achilles made a defensive save in the loss.
With the victory, New Paltz set its all-time single-season wins record with eight.
The Ducks remain in first place in the Empire 8 at 4-1 with one game remaining in conference play. They lead Washington & Jefferson College and Utica College by a half game as both schools are 3-1.
Stevens will return to action on Saturday morning against conference foe Nazareth College at 11 a.m. The department will honor the senior members of the squad with a Senior Day ceremony beginning at approximately 10:45 a.m. from the De Baun Athletic Complex.
