HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 27, 2010) – Freshman Edward Rupp tallied the game-winner 4:53 in and four different players scored goals as the No. 17 Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team rolled to a 4-0 win over SUNY College at Old Westbury on a wet Wednesday night at the De Baun Athletic Complex. With the win, Stevens improves to 11-1-3 on the year, while Old Westbury falls to 12-8.
The outcome of this match was clear from the start as the Ducks dominated every aspect of the contest. Stevens outshot the Panthers 18-2 in the first half and 39-7 for the game. The Ducks ended with an 8-2 edge in corners and the Stevens defense pitched its 13th shutout in 15 outings this season.
Rupp's tally was the first of his career and it came after a corner. Senior Michael Quijano lofted a nice ball in front of the OW cage and senior Nolan Sandberg was able to put a shot on goal. Keeper Darian Bryan (Elmont, N.Y.) stopped the initial attempt but Rupp was there to put in the rebound.
The Ducks went up 2-0 10:50 later when a Sandberg cross found junior back Peter Bednarsky in front for the goal. It was Sandberg's fifth assist of the season and Bednarsky's first goal.
In the second, the Ducks continued to press generating quality chance after quality chance. Sandberg hammered home his 12th of the season thanks to an assist from freshman Curtis Stecyk. The rookie found Sandberg alone in front of the goal and the veteran did the rest, putting a perfect shot in the lower-right corner. The assist was the first point of Stecyk's young career.
Freshman Ernesto Solis scored his first career goal in the 75th minute, beating a pair of Panther defenders and putting a shot in the lower-right corner.
Senior Zach Carr made four saves to record his 13th shutout as the Stevens defense has a team goals-against average of 0.19 this season.
The Ducks will honor their seniors prior to Saturday's regular-season finale against Utica College. Game time is set for 3 p.m. from the De Baun Athletic Complex and Senior Day festivities are set for a 2:45 p.m. For those unable to attend, all the action will be webcast live at www.PennAtlantic.com.
