No. 8 Women's Lacrosse Falls to No. 6 Colby, 11-8

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 22, 2010) – The No. 6 Colby College Mules overcame a 6-4 second-half deficit and defeated the No. 8 Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team, 11-8, on Monday afternoon at the De Baun Athletic Complex. With the win, Colby improves to 5-0 on the season, while Stevens falls to 4-1. Senior midfielder Kathleen Kramer (Norwell, Mass.) led the Mules with three goals. Senior Alyssa Pigott, junior Christine Smith, and junior Leah Wasserman all scored multiple goals for the Ducks.

Stevens fell behind early on in the action, as the Mules scored three unanswered goals over the first 9:15 of game time. The Ducks hung tough, slowed the momentum, and eventually got on the board with an unassisted tally from Smith in the 15th minute.

Wasserman pulled the Ducks within one (3-2) 2:16 after Smith's tally, and Pigott converted a free-position attempt with 8:22 remaining before intermission to tie the game at three apiece.

The score remained tied for more than seven minutes, but Kramer tallied an unassisted goal with 39 seconds to play before halftime, and Colby went into the break with a 4-3 advantage.

Neither team took advantage of free-position opportunities with the Ducks converting 1-of-7 and Colby going 0-for-3. Stevens ended the first 30 minutes with a 17-14 edge in shots and a 6-5 advantage in ground balls. Both goalkeepers were solid with Stevens' Shannon McFadden making four saves, and her counterpart, junior Sarah Warnke (Lakeville, Conn.), stopping seven Duck shots.

Stevens came out strong in the second half, scoring three-straight goals to take a 6-4 lead with 23:17 to play. Pigott, Wasserman, and Smith netted the Duck scores.

That lead would be short lived as Colby went on a 7-0 run over a span of 10:52 to take an 11-6 lead with 7:31 left. Freshman Kate Pistel (Amherst, Mass.) had two goals in the run. Pigott and senior Kate Cox recorded the final two goals of the game for Stevens but it was not enough as Colby went on for the three-goal win.

Colby ended the contest with a 32-27 advantage in shots and 19-17 advantage in ground balls. The Mules ended with a 13-8 lead in draw controls, winning 10-of-13 in the second half. Warnke made 10 saves and earned her fifth win of the season. McFadden made eight stops for the Ducks.

Cox finished with a goal, an assist, two caused turnovers, a draw control, and a team-high five ground balls for Stevens. Pigott had three tallies, two ground balls, and two caused turnovers. Senior Sam Zucker picked up a pair of ground balls and caused two turnovers, while senior Kara Borzillo had three ground balls.

Pistel and sophomore Claire Donegan (Great Falls, Va.) each scored twice for Colby. Pistel also had a game-high four draw controls, three caused turnovers, and four ground balls.

Stevens will look to get back in the win column when it visits Rowan University on March 27 at 1 p.m. Colby returns to the pitch at Drew University on March 22.
