EWING, N.J. (April 28, 2010) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team dropped its first contest in seven dual-matches with a hard-fought, 5-4, loss to The College of New Jersey at the TCNJ Student Recreation Center in Ewing, N.J. The Ducks fell to 16-3 overall on the season, while the Lions improved to 10-6 on the year. Stevens, which won six of its last seven matches and 16 of its last 18, will enter the upcoming Empire 8 Men's Tennis Tournament needing just one win to set the program's wins record. The 2010 Championships will be held at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, N.J. on May 8-9.
TCNJ sophomores Steve Fernandez (West Windsor, N.J.) and Stewart Fernandez (West Windsor, N.J.) headlined the Lions' doubles pairings with an 8-6 top-flight doubles triumph over Stevens' Shota Tasaki and Arik Zeevy.
Lions' freshmen Dean Thompson (Westfield, N.J.) and T.J. Riley (Mount Laurel, N.J.) earned an 8-4 second-flight doubles victory over senior Piotr Rusinkiewicz and Chris Rosensteel, while teammates Jason Ringstad and Gregory Klose put the Ducks on the board with a 9-7 triumph in the third slot.
Tasaki earned a 6-2, 7-5, victory in No. 1 singles, while Rosensteel, who set the program's single-season record for wins during last weekend's triumph over Rochester Institute of Technology, upped his season win-total to 25 with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, triumph in No. 2 singles. TCNJ junior Jonathan Yu (Hamilton Square, N.J.) defeated Zeevy, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, in No. 3 singles, while Ringstad notched a 6-4, 6-3, victory over Thompson in No. 4 singles.
Lions' freshman Keith Goldstein (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) downed Rusinkiewicz, 7-5, 6-3, in No. 5 singles, while sophomore Daniel Lee (Abington, Pa.) clinched the TCNJ win with a 6-4, 6-2, win in No. 6 singles.
