Women's Tennis Drops Season Finale To SUNY New Paltz

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. (April 7, 2010) – Despite sophomore Nicole Portner's win in second-flight singles, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team wrapped up its 2009-10 season with a 7-2 loss to SUNY New Paltz in New Paltz, N.Y. The Ducks finished the season with a 13-6 overall mark, while the Hawks moved to 12-2 on the year with the win.

Junior Allyson Kingman and Portner dropped their top-flight doubles match, 8-3, while sophomore Mine Bese and freshman Victoria Tran fell 8-2 in third-flight doubles. Junior Kendra Appleheimer and sophomore Morgan Scalzi notched the Ducks' lone win in doubles, defeating junior Lindsey Garyn (Melville, N.Y.) and freshman Kayla DiPaulo (Liverpool, N.Y.), 9-7, in the No. 2 slot.

Kingman fell to junior Stephanie Schara (Huntington, N.Y.), 7-6, 7-6, in No. 1 singles, while Portner defeated freshman Montana Wilson (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.), 7-6, 6-2. Appleheimer and Bese fell to their Hawk counterparts in No. 3 and No.4 singles, respectively, while freshman Alexandra Handel lost in the fifth slot. Scalzi rounded out singles play with a hard-fought, 1-6, 6-2, 10-8, loss to freshman Alexandria Esposito (Bellmore, N.Y.).
