Kowalska, Majcher Spark Women's Volleyball's Wins Over St. Josephs (LI) And Richard Stockton

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 17, 2010) – Sophomore Maggie Kowalska tallied 20 kills and 12 blocks in a pair of Ducks' matches as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team scored a pair of victories to open the 2010 Ducks Classic. Stevens opened the day with a 3-1 (25-16, 25-12, 20-25, 25-15) win over St. Joseph's – L.I. before defeating Richard Stockton College 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-15), in the nightcap. The Ducks, now 7-2 on the year, continue play at the Classic on Sunday, September 18 against SUNY Oneonta and Swarthmore College.

Senior Maggie Majcher tallied 18 kills and11 digs in Stevens' win over the Ospreys, while freshman Chrissy Dickinson finished with 18 kills and 10 blocks in the Ducks' two wins. Fellow freshman Samantha Gates dished out 32 assists in Stevens' two matches, while freshman Mary Caulson 16 kills and 25 digs in defense on the day.

Richard Stockton 3, SUNY Oneonta 0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-16)
Richard Stockton junior outside hitter Christine Velott (Moorestown, N.J.) paved the way for the Osprey's 3-0 sweep of the Red Dragons, tallying 10 kills and three digs. Fellow junior Tabitha Nejman (Runnemede, N.J.) had eight kills, two digs, and three blocks, while senior libero Allison Kleeman (Cherry Hill, N.J.) notched 11 digs in defense.

Oneonta sophomore outside hitter Kacy Boburka (Binghamton, N.J.) tallied six kills and two digs in a losing effort, while senior Kelsey Klopfer (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) had nine assists and two service aces.

Stevens 3, St. Joseph's – LI 1 (25-16, 25-12, 20-25, 25-15)
Kowalska and Dickinson each tallied nine kills to spearhead the Ducks' 3-1 win over the Golden Eagles, with Kowalska adding seven blocks. Caulson added six kills and 11 digs, while Gates passed out 12 assists.

Sophomore outside hitter Ashley Larrea (Medford, N.Y.) led the way for the Golden Eagles with five kills, while freshman counterpart April Bennett (Hampton Bays, N.Y.) finished with three kills. Junior Ashleigh Scully (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) and senior Shannon Dempsey (Lake Grove, N.Y.) each dished out three assists in the loss, with Dempsey also collecting seven digs.

FDU-Florham 3, Elmira 0 (26-24, 25-18, 25-18)
Senior middle hitter Lauren Brazier (Stony Brook, N.J.) helped the Devils to a 3-0 sweep of the Soaring Eagles, tallying 10 kills on 18 attempts, while also recording seven blocks and a service ace. Sophomore Chelsea Hoeffler (Cranford, N.J.) finished with six kills on 12 attempts in the win, while also adding 13 digs.

Sophomore Sasha Zavadska (Bratislava, Slovakia) headed up the Elmira attack with 12 kills and five digs, while junior Brittany Raykoske (Johnstown, N.Y.) had nine kills. Freshman Taryn Rumsey (Mansfield, Pa.) finished with seven kills and three digs, while senior Tesia Kaczynski (Mansfield, Pa.) had 28 assists.

Swarthmore 3, SUNY Oneonta 1 (20-25, 25-14, 25-16, 25-17)
Sophomore middle Kathryn Montemurro (Bogota, N.J.) had 13 kills and seven digs to lead the Garnet to a 3-1, comeback win over SUNY Oneonta. Junior outside hitter Genny Pezzola (Oakland, Calif.) had 11 kills and 13 digs, while sophomore setter Allie Coleman (Palo Alto, Calif.) finished with 33 helpers.

Boburka led Oneonta in the loss, with 13 kills and 11 digs. Senior middle Megan Boeltz (Greene, N.Y.) finished with nine kills, while junior libero Jessica Zerega (New City, N.Y.) had 20 digs in defense.

FDU-Florham 3, St. Joseph's – LI 0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-18)
Brazier once again spurred the Devils' offense in a 3-0 sweep of St. Joseph's, tallying five kills and three blocks on nine attempts. Larrea led the way for the Golden Eagles in the loss, notching five kills and 1 block assist.

Stevens 3, Richard Stockton 1 (21-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-15)
Majcher tallied 18 kills and 11 digs to key Stevens' 3-1 come-from-behind victory over the Ospreys. Kowalska added 11 kills and five blocks, while Caulson had 10 kills and 14 digs. Gates finished with 20 assists, while Dickinson had nine kills and six blocks.

Velott notched five kills and eight digs in the loss, while freshman Alex Galdi (King of Prussia, Pa.) had eight kills and three digs. Senior libero Christine Astarita (Selden, N.Y.) headlined the Osprey defense with 18 digs.

Swarthmore 3, Elmira 1 (17-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-21)
Pezzola led the way for the Garnet, notching 14 kills and 14 digs in Swarthmore's 3-1 comeback victory. Montemurro added 10 kills, three digs, and two blocks, while Coleman had 33 assists and four digs.

Zavadska had 18 kills and 11 digs for the Soaring Eagles in the loss, while Rumsey had 13 kills and 12 digs. Raykoske finished with 12 kills, while Kaczynski dished out 47 assists.
