SCRANTON, Pa. (September 29, 2010) – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team fell to the University of Scranton in overtime, 2-1, on Wednesday evening in Scranton, Pa. Freshman Chelsea Cresci pulled the Ducks even at one apiece in the 27th minute but the Royals were able to record the game-winner 2:31 into the first overtime to secure the victory. The loss drops the Ducks to 2-7 on the season, while Scranton improves to 4-4.
Scranton jumped on top with a tally from Kaitlyn Tirney (Springfield, Pa.) at the 5:08 mark as the senior tallied from 12 yards away with a shot from the baseline. The unassisted tally was her team-high fifth of the season.
The Ducks began to fight back over the course of the first half, and eventually pulled even with Cresci's tally. The Duck rookie was able to take a through-pass from sophomore Mary Nikish with 8:54 remaining in the opening 35.
The half ended tied at one and Stevens went into the locker room with a 6-5 edge in shots. The Royals out-cornered the Ducks 4-2.
Neither squad was able to find the back of the net in the second half, and Stevens could not convert on any of its nine corners.
The game-winner came at 72:31 from sophomore Gretchen Kempf (Warrington, Pa.). Kempf took a pass from freshman Laura Megargel (Morristown, N.J.) and was able to tally from 15 yards away.
Duck goalkeeper Ellyn Griggs made seven saves in the loss, as did Scranton goalie Alexandra Marandino (Granby, Conn.). Stevens ended the game with a 12-10 edge in shots and an 11-8 advantage in corners.
Stevens will return to conference play on Saturday afternoon when it hosts Empire 8 rival Hartwick College. Game time is slated for 3 p.m. at the De Baun Athletic Complex and all the action will be webcast live at www.PennAtlantic.com.
