Portner Seals Win With Singles Victory As Women's Tennis Downs Nazareth

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (September 5, 2010) – Junior Nicole Portner battled back from a 3-6 first-set loss at No. 4 singles, winning the next two sets by scores of 7-6 (7-5) and 6-4, respectively, to clinch the Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team's victory over Empire 8 rival Nazareth College. The Ducks are now 2-1 on the season, with a 1-1 league ledger.

Golden Eagles' freshman Alison Tepas (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and sophomore Alex Vizgaitis (Fayetteville, N.Y.) defeated Portner and senior Allyson Kingman, 8-1, in No. 1 doubles, while Stevens' No. 2 doubles tandem of Kendra Appleheimer and Lisa Tessitore scored an 8-2 victory over Nazareth sophomore Christine Cary (Selkirk, N.Y.) and senior Kelly Noble (Homer, N.Y.).

The Ducks' No. 3 doubles pairing of Mine Bese  and Morgan Scalzi closed out doubles action with a 9-7 triumph over senior Sherritta Wilkins (Rochester, N.Y.) and sophomore Cara Yinger (Fayetteville, N.Y.).

Tepas bested Tessitore, 6-3, 6-2, in first singles, while Vizgaitis outlasted Appleheimer, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4, in the second slot. Kingman emerged victorious at third singles with a 6-0, 6-1, victory over Noble, while Bese joined Portner and Kingman in the singles' winners-circle following a 6-2, 6-1, triumph over Yinger.

Stevens returns to action on Wednesday, September 8, when it plays host to Rutgers-Newark.
