Women's Volleyball Splits A Pair Of Matches At Haverford Tournament

HAVERFORD, Pa. (September 5, 2010) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team wrapped up play at the Haverford Tournament in Haverford, Pa. by splitting a pair of matches with Susquehanna University and Eastern University. The Ducks downed the Crusaders, 3-1 (25-19, 25-16, 19-25, 25-11) in the day's first match, before falling to the Eagles, 3-0 (25-22, 27-25, 25-19) in their tournament finale.

Senior outside hitter Sarah Byrne again paced the Stevens attack, registering 23 kills and 19 digs in a pair of matches. The Manlius, N.Y. native, who led Stevens to a 3-1 mark over the course of two days, earned tournament MVP honors for her efforts. Fellow senior Maggie Majcher finished with 14 kills, 21 digs, and eight blocks, while junior Amethyst Holder had 13 kills and six digs. Sophomore Maggie Kowalska added 15 kills en route to all-tournament team honors, while freshman Chrissy Dickinson tallied 11 blocks.

Senior Sara Budar and freshman Samantha Gates had 29 and 26 assists, respectively – with Budar also adding 13 digs – while senior libero Julia Reilly collected 15 digs in defense.

Stevens hosts Ramapo College in its home opener on Wednesday, September 8 – which will serve as the team's annual Duck Country event.

Stevens 3, Carnegie Mellon 1 (25-19, 25-16, 19-25, 25-11)
Despite managing just a .194 hitting percentage, a gritty Stevens squad grinded out a 25-19 first set victory over the Crusaders. The Ducks opened up a 2-0 lead in the best of five with a 25-16 victory in the second set, hitting .333. After a 25-19 set-back in the third set, Stevens wrapped things up, recording a .345 hitting percentage in the 25-11 match-clinching frame.

Byrne paced the Ducks' attack, tallying 16 kills and 10 digs, while Kowalska and Majcher notched seven kills apiece – with Majcher adding nine digs and five blocks. Budar finished with 17 assists and 10 digs, while Gates had 12 helpers, six digs, and a team-high five service aces.

Eastern 3, Stevens 0 (25-22, 27-25, 25-19)
Eastern took a closely-contested first set, 25-22, before capturing a equally tight second frame, 27-25. The Eagles completed the sweep with a 25-19 third-set victory.

Kowalska led Stevens, hitting .316 with eight kills and six blocks, while Byrne had seven kills and nine digs. Reilly collected 15 digs in defense, while Gates and Budar had 14 and 12 assists, respectively. Dickinson finished with six blocks in the loss.
