Box Score HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 18, 2011) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team (12-2) used four second-half goals to turn a 0-0 match at the half into comfortable 4-0 victory over Rutgers-Newark on Tuesday night in non-conference action. Freshman Jonathan Stallone (Hicksville, N.Y.) scored his first collegiate goal - what proved to be the game-winner - and sophomore Paul Killian (Ellicott City, Md.) earned his second-straight shutout in the cage for the Ducks.
Stevens dominated the first half statistically, outshooting the Scarlet Raiders 12-2 in the period and doubling the amount of Rutgers corner kicks (4-2). Though the ball was consistently in the Stevens offensive zone, the Ducks could not gain the advantage on the scoreboard and the half ended in a scoreless tie.
Not five minutes into the second half, Stevens broke the game open with two goals less than a minute apart. First came Stallone's strike, which was set up by Zach Bowman's (La Plata, Md.) centering pass. Stallone turned and ripped a shot towards the goal from 24 yards out to give Stevens the lead they would not relinquish. It was the first career collegiate goal for the freshman.
54 seconds later at 50:13, Curtis Stecyk (Boulder, Colo.) and Zach Adler (McKinney, Texas) engineered a pretty give-and-go at the top of the box with Adler earning the first of two consecutive assists on that play. Stecyk's goal gave Stevens a 2-0 lead and seemed to settle the game for a stretch.
Then with 26 minutes remaining, Bowman got off a hard shot that was heading for the upper reaches of the net. The Rutgers goalie was able to tip it just enough so that the ball nailed the crossbar instead of the nylon and continued out of bounds.
The Ducks would capitalize on the ensuing corner kick, however, with senior Anthony Roden (Red Creek, N.Y.) heading in Adler's service to the box for the 3-0 advantage.
Five minutes later, sophomore Ernesto Solis (Guadalajara, Mexico) capped the scoring with a nice move to shake his defender and a shot from 25 yards out that found the back of the net.
Stevens totaled 27 shots in the match, while Killian was asked to make two saves to earn the shutout.
The men's soccer team will host its senior day on Saturday, October 22 as the team hosts St. John Fisher College. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m. at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
