MONTCLAIR, N.J. (October 5, 2011) – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team had its winning streak stopped at four games on Wednesday night at Sprague Field as the Ducks fell 3-2 in overtime to ninth-ranked and undefeated Montclair State University. Senior tri-captain Mallory Swanson had a goal and an assist to lead the Ducks who fall to 5-5 on the season. MSU improved to 12-0 with the win.

Senior goalie Krysten Suarez had a nice night in goal for Stevens despite the loss, making 11 saves. Megan Bosland (Booton, N.J.) made two saves to earn the win.

Junior Marguerite Chavez gave Stevens the lead 9:43 into the action care of a Swanson assist after a penalty corner. Swanson received the ball after the corner, found Chavez in front who then flicked the ball up and over Bosland for the score.

MSU pulled even in the second half at the 38:44 mark when senior Devin McNamara (Mount Royal, N.J.) scored the first of her two tallies. Michelle Hagel (Fairfield, N.J.) carried the ball for nearly 20 yards down the middle of the field towards the goal before dishing to McNamara, who was able to find the back of the net for her ninth marker of the season.

Five minutes later, McNamara scored again to put the Red Hawks on top, and the game stayed 2-1 in favor of the hosts until Swanson tallied the equalizer with 4:21 on the clock. Again, the scoring chance came on a penalty corner. This time, Swanson was able to get her stick on a loose ball in front and put it home for her fifth score of the season.

Sophomore Brooke Hullings (Delran, N.J.) was able to lift MSU to the win, flipping a shot inside the left post just 1:49 into the 7-v-7 overtime period. Brittany Carol (Kingston, N.Y.) carried in before sliding a pass to Emily Burd (Newton, N.J.) who then found Hullings for the game-winner.

Montclair ended with a 22-7 edge in shots and a 7-5 advantage in penalty corners. The win is the third in overtime for the Red Hawks.

Stevens will return to action when it visits Empire 8 rival Nazareth College on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Montclair will face No. 13 Rowan University.
