WAYNE, N.J. (March 26, 2011) – Junior Matt Glassman finished 4-for-7 on the day with an RBI but the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team dropped a pair of games to William Paterson in a doubleheader at Jeff Albies Field in Wayne, N.J. The Ducks fell 5-2 in their opener with the Pioneers, before dropping a 3-0 contest to William Paterson in the nightcap. Stevens will look to break back into the win column on Wednesday, March 30 against John Jay College.

Game 1: William Paterson 5, Stevens 2
Scoreless after one, junior Rob Somers (West Long Branch, N.J.) led off the Pioneers' half of the second with a double down the left field line. Stevens' starter Kevin Mathews would battle back, getting a pair of strikeouts before hitting sophomore Scott Hansen (Saddle Brook, N.J.) to put two aboard. With William Paterson loading the bases after a walk, freshman A.J. Flores (West Orange, N.J.) punched a big two-out, two-RBI single to left to put the home team on the board.

An inning later, William Paterson tacked on a run when junior first baseman Adam Derner (River Edge, N.J.) – who reached on a single to center – came around to score on a wild pitch, before fellow junior Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J.) added another Pioneers' run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly to center.

Hoping to kick-start a Ducks' rally in the top of the fifth inning, freshman Dan Allen drew a two-out walk before stealing second. Senior catcher Denis Ackermann then walked to put runners on first and second, before Glassman came through with an RBI-single to left field.

Looking to further cut into the lead in the sixth, sophomore Tyler Courter ripped a single to left before advancing to second on senior Mike Pagliaro's base-knock to right. With one-out and two on, freshman Shane Raymond drew a walk to load the bases. Tucci then came up and lifted a sacrifice fly to center, plating the Ducks second run, but William Paterson got a much needed strikeout to end the inning and the Ducks' threat, securing a 5-2 victory on Dorio's RBI-sacrifice bunt in the bottom half of the frame.

Game 2: William Paterson 3, Stevens 0
Hoping to once again jump out to an early lead, Derner plated Flores – who reached on a lead-off walk – on a ground out to first, giving William Paterson a 1-0 advantage. Trying to extend the Pioneers margin in the bottom of the second, Moran ripped a two-out triple to left centerfield before scoring on a wild pitch. William Paterson would pad their cushion in the fourth, when senior Zak Rose (Nutley, N.J.) singled to center before advancing to second on a wild pitch and later scoring on a Flores base-hit through the right side.

Still scoreless after six, Stevens mounted a late rally in the top half of the seventh, loading the bases thanks in part to a pair of Pioneer errors and a walk to junior Corey Linden. With two outs and the Ducks threatening, WPU junior reliever Steve Coral (Totowa, N.J.) induced a pop-up to short, ending the game and completing the Pioneer sweep.

Linden and junior Tom Phillips each went 2-for-4 for the Ducks, while Ackermann and Glassman had Stevens only other hits. Courter scattered nine hits over five innings, allowing three runs in the loss.

Flores went 1-for-2 with an RBI and run scored, as nine different Pioneers accounted for William Paterson's nine hits. Paterson starter Josh Jensen (West Milford, N.J.) nearly went the distance, lasting six and two thirds, surrendering six hits, while striking out four in a shutout win.
