HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 30, 2011) – Senior pitcher Dan Anunziatta tossed a complete-game, four-hitter to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team to a 3-1 win in game two of an Empire 8 doubleheader with Utica College on Saturday evening. Junior right fielder Matt Glassman and junior second baseman Tom Phillips provided the offensive firepower in the Ducks' win, driving in all three runs. Utica took game one by a score of 9-0.

Stevens is now 12-19 on the season (4-6 Empire 8) having won seven of its last nine games. The Ducks are looking to get back to the .500 mark in order to qualify for the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Metro Championship. Utica falls to 5-22 overall and 3-6 in the Empire 8.

Utica 9, Stevens 0 – Game One
In game one, the Ducks left 12 runners on base and were unable to capitalize on many scoring chances, getting the leadoff man on in five of the seven innings. Utica plated a run in the first inning, before scoring five in the second. The big blow was a three-run homer off the bat of sophomore shortstop Chris Podlucky (Grand Island, N.Y.). The Pioneers scored two more in the fourth and one in the seventh for the final 9-0 margin.

Sophomore starter Kevin Mathews took the loss on the mound for Stevens, giving up nine hits and eight runs (five earned) 3.1 innings of work. Senior Kyle Hanas pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief for the Ducks, allowing no runs and no hits, striking out four and walking just one.

Senior Chris Pallas (Rome, N.Y.) earned the win on the hill for the Pioneers, tossing a complete-game, six-hit shutout. He struck out nine Ducks while walking four.

Utica totaled 12 hits in the game with senior Anthony DiSalvo (New Hartford, N.Y.) going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. Leftfielder Alex Choleva (Coventry, Conn.) was 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while Podlucky finished 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored.

Phillips had two hits to lead the Ducks.

Stevens 3, Utica 1 – Game Two
After Anunziatta fanned the side in the first, the Ducks were able to plate two runs with a two-out rally. Senior catcher Denis Ackermann walked and senior centerfielder Russ Grimes doubled to put runners on second and third with two outs. Glassman followed with a two-run double down the left-field line to give the Ducks their first lead of the day.

Phillips delivered his second home run of the season in the fifth inning to give Stevens some insurance, and the only Blemish on Anunziatta's line was a one-out home run to left-center field off the bat of sophomore Nick Dunbar (Granville, N.Y.).

Phillips, Glassman, and Grimes had the three hits in game two for Stevens, with Phillips, Ackermann, and Grimes accounting for the runs scored. Glassman (two) and Phillips had the runs batted in.

Anunziatta went seven-strong for Stevens, striking out 10 and walking two. He was charged with just one earned run and induced seven ground-ball outs. The senior lowered his earned run average to 2.35 on the season and improved his record to 3-1.

Stevens and Utica will close out the series on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. Stevens will honor its seniors prior to the game and all the action will be webcast live at www.PennAtlantic.com.
