HAVERFORD, Pa. (September 3, 2011) – On the first day of the Haverford College Tournament, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team took down Frostburg State University, 3-1, in its first match, but dropped a 3-2 decision to Susquehanna University in the second contest. The Ducks play two more matches tomorrow against two nationally ranked top-ten teams.

Against the Bobcats, all four sets came down to at least four points (21-25, 25-22, 27-25, 25-23). Sophomore Chrissy Dickinson led the Ducks with 18 kills and three aces, while junior Maggie Kowalska added 14 kills and two blocks.

Sophomore Mikayla Floyd once again had another solid all-around performance, tallying 14 kills, 10 digs and three aces for the Ducks. Sophomore Samantha Gates was the top distributor for Stevens, handing out 48 assists to go along with seven digs on the defensive end.

Also contributing in the four-set victory were senior Kate Janes and sophomore Hannah Gasper. Janes chipped in three kills and two blocks, while Gasper recorded seven digs.

In the second match of the day, a five-set heartbreaker to Susquehanna University (25-20, 25-19, 19-25, 19-25, 15-17), the Ducks seemed to be destined for the straight-sets sweep, but the Crusaders came to life in the third and fourth sets to force the decisive fifth set.

The Ducks held leads of 11-7 and 14-12, but Susquehanna fought back with four straight points to knot the match at 11 and then took a 15-14 lead before ending the set and taking the overall match, 3-2.

Kowalska was the top offensive threat in the second match, registering 17 kills, six digs and two blocks. Dickinson added another double-digit kills effort with 10 and also blocked four attempts by Crusaders hitters.

Sophomore Mary Caulson put together a strong performance, posting 15 digs and 10 kills, while fellow sophomore Ashley Castillo handed out 26 assists.

Gasper and Janes one again chipped in solid supporting roles, as Gasper had 10 more digs and three aces, and Janes recorded seven kills, seven digs and two blocks.

The Ducks are back in action tomorrow with two tough tests in nationally-ranked No. 4 Christopher Newport University and No. 8 California Lutheran University. Their first game is at 10 a.m. against Cal Lutheran.
