HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 18, 2012) – In a highly contested dual match in Walker Gymnasium on January 18, the Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team dropped a 23-18 decision to Elizabethtown College. The Ducks (7-4) led the dual on two different occasions but could not build an advantage by more than three points.
The dual began in a slightly unorthodox fashion, as the heavyweights kicked off the action and the Blue Jays' (8-4) Jeremy Rieth picked up a 12-3 major decision victory over junior Chris Moyer (Coplay, Pa.).
Another four-point major decision went to Elizabethtown at 125, as Will Bentley blanked Stevens' freshman Andrew Geiger (South Amboy, N.J.), 14-0, to give the Jays an early 8-0 lead.
The Ducks finally got on the board at 133 when sophomore Andrew Boehm (Granville, Ohio) pulled out a 5-3 decision win over Nick Grimm. After the first period, the bout was knotted at zero and at two apiece going into the final two minutes, but a huge takedown by Boehm was the deciding factor.
Freshman Mike Polizzi (Montville, N.J.) then gave the Ducks their first lead with a pin of Corey Aspril just 1:21 into the first period at 141. With the fall, Stevens held a tight 9-8 lead.
Elizabethtown would win the next two bouts at 149 and 157, respectively, as Tye Boyer recorded a 14-5 major decision win over sophomore CJ Caserta (Mt. Arlington, N.J.), and then Zack Sheridan clipped junior Ryan Owens (Fallston, Md.), 4-2. The Blue Jays carried a 15-9 lead into the 165 matchup.
In the 165 showdown, junior Joey Favia (Brick, N.J.) trimmed the Blue Jays' lead to 15-12, with a 4-1 decision over Quint Eno. The Ducks then went ahead, 18-15, after junior Will Sharkey (Westminster, Md.) picked up six crucial points against Julian Meaney by way of an injury default at 174.
The last two bouts would go to the Blue Jays as would the overall match. At 184, Elizabethtown registered another major decision win as Dylan Carmichael topped junior Jason Nowakoski (Jackson, N.J.), 9-1. In the final bout of the night at 197, Bill Meaney wrapped up the match with a 13-5 major decision over sophomore Alex Moreno (Tenafly, N.J.).
Stevens travels to Virginia this upcoming weekend on the 21st as it takes on Washington & Lee University and McDaniel College in a Centennial Conference tri-match at 11 a.m.
