Box Score
HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 13, 2012) – Freshman
Dailyn Brook (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and sophomore
Jillian Fiebel (Roxbury, N.J.) each had one goal and one assist as the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team earned an important 2-1 Empire 8 victory over Hartwick College at the De Baun Athletic Complex Saturday morning.
Stevens dictated all the action in the first half, dominating possession and field position, but the Ducks were unable to find the back of the net thanks to an excellent performance in goal from Hartwick senior
Megan Campbell (Rutland, Mass.). Campbell made nine saves in the first half as the Ducks ended the period with a 14-1 margin in shots and a 13-0 edge in penalty corners.
The Ducks had many chances with junior back
Megan Traub (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) firing just wide on a pair of shots after penalty corners and Fiebel knocking on the Hawks' door step with a pair of shots but getting denied by Campbell.
Hartwick did not have any strong scoring chances in the opening period as the Stevens defense and midfield of junior
Katie Achilles (Portsmouth, N.H.), senior
Samantha Weisman (Fairfax, Va.), junior
Grace Ridge (Moorestown, N.J.), junior
Chelsea Cresci (Wilmington, Del.) and freshman
Samantha Shiner (Exter, Pa.) turned away the Hawks any time they did cross into the Stevens zone.
Despite being outplayed early, Hartwick jumped on the board first, netting their second shot of the game and first shot of the second half. Senior
Kelsey Kimble (Dingmans Ferry, Pa.) broke away and entered the circle one-one-one with senior goalie
Kaitlin McClymont (Corpus Christi, Texas). McClymont appeared at first to have made the save but the ball squirted through to give the guests a 1-0 lead at 44:18.
The Ducks answered with an equalizer just 2:16 later when Fiebel put a shot in front and Brook was on the left post to redirect the shot in. The goal was the ninth of the year for Brook.
That same duo hooked up for the Ducks' second goal in the 54th minute when Brook crossed in front and Fiebel was there for the redirect and her sixth goal of the season.
Stevens came close on several occasions to expand its lead late but was unable, and Hartwick looked to have tied the score with 4:15 on the clock but a horizontal diving save from McClymont kept the Ducks on top.
Stevens ended with a 25-4 margin in shots and a 17-5 edge in penalty corners. McClymont made one spectacular save on the afternoon, while Campbell ended with 12.
With the win, Stevens moves to 6-0 in the Empire 8, 10-5 overall and has now won its last three contests. Hartwick drops to 3-2 in the conference and 6-7 overall. Stevens has already clinched a berth in the conference tournament scheduled for November 3 and 4. A win in either of its two final regular-season conference contests at Elmira College – rescheduled for October 28 – or at Washington & Jefferson College on October 20 will give the Ducks the tournament's top seed and host privileges.
Prior to the game, Stevens honored its seniors – Weisman, Nikish and McClymont as part of Senior Day festivities. The Ducks will return to action at Rowan University October 17. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
