Box Score
HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 13, 2012) – On the day where the No. 15 Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer program honored its senior class, the Ducks exemplified the winning soccer formula that has made the last four seasons so successful for the seniors. Suffocating defense and opportune offense combined for a 3-0 win over conference rival Elmira College on Saturday.
Stevens had nearly all the good scoring opportunities in the match, as the Soaring Eagles were held to just two shots on goal and four shots in total. Stevens tested Elmira goalkeeper
Kevin Huggins (Cooperstown, N.Y.) nine times and sent a total of 23 shots towards the net.
The first good chance came twenty minutes into the match, when
Edward Rupp (Sayville, N.Y.) got off a header that hit the top of the crossbar and out. It was a skillful attempt by the junior.
Though they were denied on that original header, five minutes later the Ducks were able to capitalize on one.
Leonardo Casas (Kearny, N.J.) sent a long volley into the box that
Curtis Stecyk (Boulder, Colo.) was able to turn into a goal from at least 15 yards out for the 1-0 lead. The teams would go into the half with the Ducks up one.
Very early in the second half Stevens go on the board again. This time,
Kevin Calloway (Sewell, N.J.) and
Stephen Dunbar (Johns Creek, Ga.) were on the run deep in the Eagles zone. Calloway crossed left in the box for Dunbar who put it away for a 2-0 advantage less than a minute into the second period.
Ten minutes later, Dunbar was in good scoring position when
Jonathan Stallone's (Hicksville, N.Y.) shot attempt was blocked down in front. The rebound came back to Dunbar who buried it in a wide-open net for his second score of the game.
The Ducks gave up just one Elmira shot in the second half as the defense allowed the team to cruise to their 10th-straight victory. Stevens also did well to maintain its composure as Elmira earned four yellow cards on the afternoon and the Ducks merited just one.
Stevens will hit the road for the final three matches of the regular season. Up next is a non-conference tilt at Rutgers-Newark at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
