Men's Soccer Notches 1-1 Draw With King's

Hoboken, N.J. – Martin Fields scored his first goal of the season as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team played King's College to a 1-1 draw in their Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom opener on Saturday evening at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

The Ducks (5-1-2, 0-0-1 MAC Freedom) held a 16-11 advantage in shots while earning eight corner kicks. Bobby Boyke made three saves in goal for Stevens.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens generated the first opportunity of the contest when Fields sent an attempt high in the fifth minute. King's answered with three shots over the next 13 minutes before Stevens began to create more chances later in the opening half. Joseph Conte registered an attempt in the 29th minute before Lucas Mendes put the Ducks' first shot on goal in the 38th, forcing a save. Zain Akhtar added the final Stevens attempt of the period as the teams entered halftime scoreless.

The Ducks came out aggressively after the break. Matthew Murillo recorded an attempt less than two minutes into the second half before Stevens earned a corner kick in the 51st minute. The pressure paid off in the 53rd minute. Francesco Bonavita served in a corner kick and Fields rose up and headed the ball past the King's keeper to give Stevens a 1-0 advantage.

Stevens nearly doubled its advantage five minutes later when RJ Dougherty struck the right post. Conte followed with an attempt on target moments later, but the King's goalkeeper made the save. King's pulled even in the 66th minute, with King's scoring off a corner kick. Ducks responded with sustained pressure in search of the go-ahead goal. Stevens registered four shots in a span of just over a minute beginning in the 77th minute. Omar Martinez and Dougherty were stopped in close before Murillo pulled a shot wide. Stevens earned two more corner kicks over the final 14 minutes but was unable to find the deciding goal as the teams settled for the 1-1 draw.
