HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 14, 2012) – In the 2012 home opener for the No. 30 Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team, the Ducks fell to No. 26 The College of New Jersey 31-11, in front of a capacity crowd in Walker Gymnasium. Wednesday evening's match marked the first dual for Stevens in the early start to the season.

The Ducks trailed 15-0 after the first three bouts of the match before sophomore Mike Polizzi (Montville, N.J.) scored a technical fall victory in the 149-lb. class. Polizzi took down John Palsi, 15-0, for the first five points of the dual for Stevens. The sophomore jumped out to a 9-0 advantage after the first round and tacked on three more points in each of the next two rounds.

In the next bout at 157, sophomore Conner Bass (Westhampton, N.Y.) came from behind to claim a 9-6 decision win against Nick Herring. Bass and Herring were even at 3-3 after the first round before Herring took a 6-4 lead into the final two-minute tangle. In the final frame, Bass tallied five points on two takedowns and one escape to cut the Lions' edge to 15-8.

At 165, senior Joey Favia (Brick, N.J.) added three more points to the scoreboard for the Ducks in a battle of top 10 grapplers in the weight class. Favia, ranked fifth, took down No. 6 John Darling, 3-2, in a highly contested decision outcome. Favia led, 1-0, after two rounds before Darling knotted the bout up with an escape. The difference in the match was a takedown by Favia to take a 3-1 lead before the final point was scored by Darling.

Senior Ryan Owens (Fallston, Md.) tangled in an exhibition bout at the conclusion of the match and won a 7-6 decision over Derek Zehnbauer.

Stevens returns to the mats on November 17 at the Doug Parker Invitational in Springfield, Mass.
