BALTIMORE, Md. (February 12, 2012) – In a Centennial Conference tri-match hosted by Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, the Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling squad came away with two victories over the Blue Jays and Gettysburg College on February 12. The Ducks are now 12-7 overall this season and 6-1 in the Centennial, which is good for second in the conference at this time.
In the 21-19 opening win over the Bullets, Stevens fell into a 10-0 deficit before freshman Mike Polizzi (Montville, N.J.) put the Ducks on the board with a 3-0 decision victory over Andrew Petroulias in the 141-lb. class. At 149, sophomore CJ Caserta (Mt. Arlington, N.J.) recored six points for Stevens with a pin of Tony Stanell in 2:40 to cut the Bullets' lead to just one.
Stevens would surrender six points over the next two bouts before junior Ryan Dormann (Mickleton, N.J.) topped Jared Leon by a 4-1 decision and cut the Gettysburg lead back to back, 16-9. In the next bout, junior Will Sharkey (Westminster, Md.) put the Ducks ahead with a fall victory against Anthony Iorio in 1:55.
The Ducks would build their lead to 21-16, after sophomore Alex Moreno (Tenafly, N.J.) put down his counterpart, Marshall Puls, 5-3, for the decision.
Gettysburg would go on to win the final bout, but would come up two points short of a tie.
Against Johns Hopkins, the Ducks once again found themselves trying to dig out of a hole, only this time it was six points after the first three bouts. A double forfeit at 125 and two decision wins at 133 and 141, staked the Blue Jays to a 6-0 advantage.
The Ducks would go on to win five of the next seven bouts and take home a 16-12 hard-fought road victory.
At 149, Caserta tallied his second win of the day with a 5-0 decision over Henry Stauber to make the make, 6-3.
Hopkins scored another decision win at 157 before junior Joey Favia (Brick, N.J.) dominated Christian Salera, 21-9, at 165 for the major decision and four team points.
With the score, 9-7, in favor of the Jays, Dormann scored a 9-3 win over Jody Gowen to put Stevens on top of the match for good. Sharkey would take down Ben Finelli, 8-7, in the 184 bout to increase the Ducks' lead to 13-9.
The 197 bout went to Hopkins by way of decision to make the contest a nail-biting, 13-12 score going into the final dual.
In that matchup at 285, Maher took down Evan Johnson with a two-point near fall in the waning seconds of the match. Before that critical move, Maher was trailing, 4-3, but scored his own victory and a team win for Stevens by way of a 5-4 decision.
The Ducks have one more home dual this season on February 15, when they take on Centennial rival, United States Merchant Marine Academy at 7:30 p.m. The Stevens Athletic Department will be holding a pizza and t-shirt giveaway throughout the entirety of the dual.
