HAVERFORD, Pa. (February 29, 2012) – Though sophomore Andrew Riggs (Auburn, Calif.) of the Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team defeated Matt Romei (Chatham, N.J.) of Haverford College 6-0, 6-1 at third singles, the Fords took the rest of the day's matches and beat the visiting Ducks by an 8-1 final. The Ducks fall to 0-2, while Wednesday's pairing was Haverford's first match of the year.
The matchup was closer than may appear at first glance, as Chris Rosensteel (East Windsor, N.J. / first singles), Shota Tasaki (Greenwich, Conn. / second) and Nicholas Rosasco (Alpine, N.J. / fourth) all took their singles matches past two sets.
Doubles were also well contested, with the Fords taking the first- and second- doubles matchups by identical 8-5 scores. A few points the other way and Wednesday's matchup would have been a tight one.
Riggs improved to 4-1 on the year with the win.
Stevens will play next on its trip to Florida for spring break. The Ducks will take one Florida Tech on March 12, St. Lawrence on the 13th and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on the 14th.
