Baseball Drops Two at Ithaca

(April 28, 2012) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team dropped both ends of an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader at Ithaca College on Saturday, 5-1, 11-1. Stevens falls to 20-15 overall on the season and only managed to pick up 12 total hits in the double dip. The Ducks can still play spoiler for the outright conference champion over the next four games if they can pick up a victory against the Bombers tomorrow or take one of three against St. John Fisher College next weekend.

In the opener, the Stevens offense was kept off balance for the entire seven-inning game. The Ducks only recorded four hits, including a double in the Game One loss.

Junior infielder Michael Donovan (Mendham, N.J.) went 1-for-3 at the plate with a double, while senior designated hitter TJ Alcorn (Turnersville, N.J.) drove in the lone run of the contest in a 1-for-3 effort.

Graduate student Matt Glassman (Basking Ridge, N.J.) picked up the only run of the game in one trip to the plate, which included a hit. Senior infielder Tom Phillips (Spring Lake, N.J.) tallied one hit in four trips to the dish.

On the mound, sophomore Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) was dealt the loss in 5.2 innings of work. Allen allowed six hits and five runs while striking out one batter before senior Vincent Vinci (Howell, N.J.) recorded the final out on a punch out.

In Game Two, junior infielder Tyler Courter (Glenwood, N.J.) drove in a run with two hits in four at bats. Donovan scored a run in four at bats, while Phillips stole a base with a single in three trips to the plate.

Glassman and Allen also picked up singles for the Ducks in the nightcap.

Sophomore Gary Boardman (Staten Island, N.Y.) got the nod for Game Two and tossed 4.1 innings in the defeat. Boardman surrendered six hits and six runs in the outing. Freshman Peirce Marston (Silver Spring, Md.) threw one inning in relief and struck out three batters and gave up two hits. Freshmen Ryan Mannello (Staten Island, N.Y.) and John Howarth (Fanwood, N.J.) recorded the final 2.2 innings of work in Game Two. Mannello allowed four runs on four hits in an inning, while Howarth picked up two strikeouts and gave up three hits in 1.2 innings.

Stevens faces off with Ithaca tomorrow at 1 p.m. for a nine-inning game. The Ducks close out their regular season next weekend at St. John Fisher for three games over May 5-6.
