Baseball Splits with Utica After Shortened Game Two

(April 6, 2012) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team splits its doubleheader with Empire 8 Conference rival Utica College on Friday, April 6 in Utica, N.Y. after Game Two was called due to darkness heading into the ninth inning. Stevens won the first game, 11-4, but fell in the shortened night cap, 10-9. The Ducks are now 15-10 overall and 2-2 in the Empire 8.

Stevens jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the top of the first inning, but the Pioneers answered with a run in each of the next two frames to knot the score at 2, heading into the third. In the top half of the third, the Ducks erupted for four runs and build a 6-2 advantage and then tacked out three more in the sixth and two in the seventh to blow the game open.

In the opener, graduate student infielder Matt Glassman (Basking Ridge, N.J.) continued his stellar play as of late, going 2-for-2 with two walks, four runs scored and a run batted in. Glassman was also hit by a pitch and doubled in Game One to lead Stevens offensively.

Three other Stevens' hitters record two hits in the first game. Senior designated hitter TJ Alcorn (Turnersville, N.J.) was perfect at the plate with a 2-for-2 showing with an RBI and run scored, including a double. Freshman outfielder Brian Hennelly (Holbrook, N.Y.) and junior infielder Michael Donovan (Mendham, N.J.) both scored a run and drove in another as part of 2-for-4 openers for both of them. Hennelly also doubled.

Freshman outfielder Ryan Mannello (Staten Island, N.Y.) pinch hit for Alcorn and drove in two runs, scored once and double in two trips to the plate.

Sophomore Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) earned the start in Game One and picked up the win in six innings pitched. Allen scattered six hits and three runs (one earned) with eight strikeouts. Allen also went 1-for-3 at the dish with a homerun, a walk, two RBI and two runs scored.

Sophomore catcher Curt Lowenstein (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) stole a base, singled, scored once, drove in another and was hit by a pitch in three at bats.

Out of the bullpen, senior Vincent Vinci (Howell, N.J.) walked two batters in one-third of an inning before giving way to freshman John Howarth (Fanwood, N.J.), who recorded the final two outs with one strikeout. Both relievers did not give up a hit.

Game Two was called due to darkness in the top of the ninth with the Ducks trailing, 10-9. Stevens went into the bottom half of the eighth inning with a 9-3 lead.

Glassman once again led Stevens at the dish, going 2-for-5 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored. Lowenstein crossed the plate twice in a 1-for-3 Game Two, while Alcorn and senior infielder Tom Phillips (Spring Lake, N.J.) drove in a run and scored with one hit a piece. Phillips also stole a base.

Sophomore Gary Boardman (Staten Island, N.Y.) threw six innings in the no decision and fanned five batters. Boardman allowed six hits and three runs (two earned) in his outing. Junior Kevin Mathews (Jackson, N.J.) tossed one inning in relief and surrendered one hit with a strikeout. Senior Chris Tucci (Calverton, N.Y.) entered the game in the eighth and gave up two hits and three runs (one earned), before Howarth recorded three outs but gave up three hits and four runs.

The Ducks will be back on the diamond tomorrow at 11 a.m. for a nine-inning game against Utica.
