ROCHESTER, N.Y. (September 1, 2012) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team played a tight match with Empire 8 rival Nazareth College to begin its 2012 season on Saturday, with the visiting Ducks coming out on the short end of a 5-4 decision. Freshman Julia Guignard (Lowville, N.Y.) had an auspicious collegiate debut, earning victories at second doubles and fourth singles for Stevens.
Though Guignard and Danielle Stewart (North Plainfield, N.J.) won their second doubles matchup 8-6, the Ducks found themselves trailing 2-1 after the doubles portion of the match. Seniors Lexie Handel (Sparta, N.J.) and Victoria Tran (South Plainfield, N.J.) were defeated 9-8 (7-3) in a tiebreaker at threes.
In singles, Jessica Bourque (Houma, La.) and Guignard won handily in straight sets, and captain Lisa Tessitore (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) won an epic 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 10-7 match in the number two slot. Nazareth came away with three singles wins of its own, however, and took the match 5-4.
Stevens will be back in Empire 8 action tomorrow at Elmira College. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
