Box Score
HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 12, 2012) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team knocked off The College of New Jersey on Wednesday afternoon in a 1-0 match at the DeBaun Athletic Complex. Sophomore Jonathan Stallone (Hicksville, N.Y.) converted a superb pass from junior defenseman Leonardo Casas (Kearny, N.J.) into the only goal of the game with 22 minutes remaining in regulation.

Casas began the fateful play by dribbling through the middle, over the center line and into the Lion zone. He drew two defenders as he continued though the center and made a touch pass over to Stallone on the right side. Stallone was open, took a couple of steps and then sent a hard shot to the far post. The ball eluded TCNJ goalkeeper Maciej Libucha (Woodland Park, N.J.) and struck the side netting to give Stallone his first goal of the year and the only score of the game for either side.

Both teams had played a defensive game leading up to the score, with neither side even recording a shot for the first 19 minutes of the match. Victor Daza (North Plainfield, N.J.) had a strong strike on the goal with 22 minutes left in the first half, but Libucha was positioned well and came up with the save. The only shot of the half by the Lions came from far outside the box.

The Ducks allowed just one shot on goal for the game and four shots total as junior Paul Killian (Ellicott City, Md.) earned his third shutout of the year.

Two minutes into the second half, Zach Adler (McKinney, Texas) threatened as he controlled the ball on the endline near the TCNJ cage, but could he could not find a proper angle for the shot on net. Three minutes later, the Ducks had two more decent chances but could not pull the trigger on their final touches.

Overall, Stevens was whistled for 11 offside infractions, which nullified more than a few shots and scoring threats.

TCNJ's best chance to tie came with 14 minutes remaining in the contest. Jordan Kayal (Mahwah, N.J.) struck the ball well but sent his attempt high over the crossbar. The Lions were shut down after that opening.

Stevens will begin Empire 8 play this weekend and travel to Houghton College for the first-ever men's soccer clash between the Ducks and Highlanders. Kickoff is scheduled for noon on September 15.
