Box Score HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 19, 2012) – Freshman
Dailyn Brook (Cherry Hill, N.J.) scored a pair of first-half goals and senior goalie
Kaitlin McClymont (Corpus Christi, Texas) made 11 saves to help lead the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team to well-earned 3-2 win over Fairleigh Dickinson University – Florham Wednesday night at the De Baun Athletic Complex. With the victory, Stevens improves to 4-3 overall.
The first half featured some exciting back-and-forth action with the Ducks taking a 2-1 lead into the break. Brook put Stevens on the board with some help from junior forward
Marguerite Chavez (Oceanport, N.J.). Sophomore midfielder
Jill Fiebel (Roxbury, N.J.) found Chavez in the middle of the circle and the junior made some moves before firing a shot from straight-on at the left post. Brook was positioned perfectly to deflect it in just 2:38 into the action.
Junior midfielder
Lanie Andrews (Lafayette, N.J.) scored her seventh goal of the year exactly six minutes later, controlling a loose ball in front and blasting a backhanded shot into the left corner.
On Stevens' second score of the first, senior forward
Mary Nikish (Pittsford, N.Y.) fought in front for a loose ball, eventually finding Brook on the left post for the score. It was her fifth marker of the season and the seventh assist for Nikish.
The Devils (4-3) ended the first half with an 11-5 margin in shots, three coming from senior midfielder
Kelsey Kistle (Sandyston, N.J.) on one sequence in front that featured a trio of nice saves from McClymont. FDU also ended the opening period with a 4-0 margin in penalty corners.
The Ducks pushed the score to 3-1 on a gorgeous play, shot and goal from Chavez 8:29 into the second half. The junior ran down a loose ball in the left side of the circle, and cut against the grain back towards the middle. With a defender on her left hip, she ripped a missile into the lower left corner, giving FDU goalie
Tess Loughran (Newton, N.J.) absolutely no chance at a play.
Over the next 15-plus minutes the Ducks controlled the action but over the final 10, the visitors did their best to tie the game. Andrews crossed to Kistle in front for a tap in with 9:15 on the clock to make it a one-goal game at 3-2, but the Ducks did enough to hold on.
Junior back
Katie Achilles (Portsmouth, N.H.), senior back
Samantha Weisman (Fairfax, Va.), junior midfielder
Chelsea Cresci (Wilmington, Del.), junior back
Megan Traub (Berkeley Heights, N.J.), junior back
Grace Ridge (Moorestown, N.J.) and freshman back
Angela Barouth (Rockville, Md.) all made plays to help Stevens secure the win.
FDU ended with a 19-9 margin in shots and a 10-2 edge corners. Loughran made three saves, with McClymont notching 11 on the evening. Ridge recorded Stevens' first defensive save of the season early in the second half.
The Ducks, winners of their last two contests and three of four, will host Ithaca College on Saturday evening at 5 p.m. That game is slated for a 5 p.m. start at the De Baun Athletic Complex.
