Box Score
SWARTHMORE, Pa. (September 19, 2012) – Sophomore Quinn Conner (Newfields, N.H.) fired a 30-yard, unassisted, game-winning strike with one minute remaining in the first overtime to give the visiting Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team a stirring 2-1 victory over No. 18 and previously unbeaten Swarthmore College on Wednesday evening. Senior Victor Daza (North Plainfield, N.J.) made good on a penalty kick late in the first half for the other Duck goal of the night.
It was an exceedingly tight match, with the sides evenly splitting the shots taken at 12 apiece. Though the Garnet took more corner kicks (7 to 1), the Ducks challenged Swarthmore goalkeeper Peter Maxted (Port Washington, N.Y.) twice as often (8 shots on goal to 4). Swarthmore was also whistled for four offside violations while the Ducks kept that side of the scoresheet clean.
Swarthmore came out ready to play from the first touch. After earning a throw-in deep in the Stevens zone, the ball found its way into the box, ricocheted off some bodies in front and came to forward Michael Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa.). The sophomore knocked the ball into the twine for the early goal at exactly the one-minute mark, with Joe Keedy (Petosky, Mich.) earning an assist on the play.
Stevens earned a chance to tie the match following a goal kick and a Swarthmore foul in the box. Daza was elected to take the penalty kick for the Ducks and he converted, sending the sphere past Maxted to knot things up again before halftime.
The teams continued their even play in the second half. Swarthmore earned four corner kicks but only managed two shots on goal; both of which were taken care of by Paul Killian (Ellicott City, Md.) between the pipes for the Ducks. Stevens took five shots but also could not come up with a score, so the teams headed to overtime.
After nine minutes of play in the extra period, Conner controlled the ball 30 yards out and elected to test the Garnet goalkeeper. His instinct was justified - Maxted lost his footing and was powerless to stop the flight of the ball into his cage for the sudden-death win.
Stevens held Swarthmore without a shot in OT…The Ducks are now 5-2 on the year and topped a ranked Swarthmore squad for the second-straight year…The Ducks also handed Swarthmore its first loss of last season with a 1-0 victory on September 21, 2011.
