PITTSBURGH, Pa. (September 2, 2012) – Despite goalkeeper Paul Killian's (Ellicott City, Md.) remarkable performance between the pipes, the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team (1-1) came out on the short end of a 1-0 match with Carnegie Mellon on Sunday morning. The Tartans (2-0) scored with 40 seconds remaining in regulation to clinch the upset victory.
Killian made 11 saves on the day in what was an instant classic in Pittsburgh. The entire match was a back-and-forth affair with both sides creating scoring opportunities. But Killian and CMU goalie Chris Madden (Reistertown, Md.) shut each of them down until the last-minute breakthrough.
For Stevens, senior Zach Adler (McKinney, Texas) generated four shots on goal by himself, and was involved in the Ducks' best scoring opportunity in the 84th minute. Adler found classmate Victor Daza (North Plainfield, N.J.) in front, but Madden got just enough of Daza's shot to keep it out of the CMU net.
Stephen Dunbar (Johns Creek, Ga.) also threatened twice, with a good chance from the left side at the 60-minute mark and a header opportunity on a pass from Daza ten minutes later.
Ultimately it was John Crawshaw (Carnegie, Pa.) who broke the game-long deadlock, popping Chris Wysocki's (Mewtown, Pa.) pass into the Stevens cage with 40 seconds showing on the scoreboard.
Stevens will be back in action on Wednesday night in its home opener, a 7 p.m. date with in-state rival Drew University at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
