HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 26, 2013) – Six players scored goals including a hat trick from sophomore forward
Dailyn Brook (Cherry Hill, N.J.) as the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team completed a perfect Empire 8 regular season with a 9-1 win over Elmira College Saturday afternoon at the De Baun Athletic Complex.
With the win, Stevens improves to 7-0 in the Empire 8 and 12-5 overall. The Ducks have now won their last 20 regular season conference outings dating back to a September 17, 2011 loss at Utica College. This clean E8 regular season ledger is the second straight for Stevens.
The nine goals for the Ducks ties the single-game program mark originally set on October 13, 2007 against Elmira College. The Ducks were one shy of the single-game points mark of 25 set in that same game, tallying 24 behind the nine goals and six assists.
Elmira drops to 4-10 overall and 1-6 in the Empire 8.
The Ducks took control of the ball and field position early, and nearly scored less than two minutes in when senior forward
Marguerite Chavez (Oceanport, N.J.) found
Rachel Chavez (Oceanport, N.J.) in front for a pair of strong chances that Elmira goalkeeper
Lauren Thomas (Marshfield, Mass.) was able to save.
Thomas kept the Ducks at bay as long as she could, but the constant pressure finally caught up with the guests as Stevens poured in three goals over a span of 8:52 late in the first half.
The first came off the stick of junior midfielder
Jillian Fiebel (Roxbury, N.J.). On the play, sophomore midfielder
Dailyn Brook (Cherry Hill, N.J.) found
Rachel Chavez with a pass down the right seam. Chavez used some slick moves before passing across the mouth of the goal from right-to-left, finding Fiebel in front for the score.
Senior back
Megan Traub (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) gave Stevens a 2-0 edge 2:41 later, converting a penalty stroke for her eighth goal of the season, and at 30:07, Brook knocked in her 10th goal of the year after scrum in front. The third goal marked the 12th time this season the Ducks tallied three or more times.
Stevens continued to dominate the contest in the second half, getting six more markers and holding Elmira to just four shots and two corners for the entire game. The Ducks took 47 shots of their own and 23 penalty corners.
Rachel Chavez put home a nice cross from freshman midfielder
Nolie Prouty (Glendora, Calif.) to get the Stevens second-half scoring surge underway. Prouty tallied her fifth assist on the play, with Chavez getting her seventh goal.
Freshman forward
Taylor Welch (Ringwood, N.J.) netted the second goal of her career in the 50th minute, fighting her way into the circle, maintaining possession before putting in a precision shot into the right corner.
Marguerite Chavez netted a pair 5:59 apart to give Stevens a 7-0 advantage with 12:59 on the clock. The goals were the 13th and 14th of the year for Chavez with Prouty and sophomore midfielder
Erin Silvestri (Beverly, Mass.) pocketing the assists.
Brook scored back-to-back goals 1:09 apart with assists from senior midfielder
Chelsea Cresci (Wilmington, Del.) and Fiebel to close out the Stevens scoring.
Marguerite Chavez, Traub,
Rachel Chavez, Prouty, Brook, Welch and Fiebel all had at least two points for Stevens. Brook led the way with six,
Marguerite Chavez had four, with
Rachel Chavez and Fiebel getting three apiece.
Freshman goalie
Emily Stukenborg made two saves to earn the win in goal for Stevens. Thomas made 21 for Elmira in the loss.
The Ducks will return to action at Skidmore College next Saturday. They will then host the Empire 8 Tournament as the No. 1 seed November 9 and 10 at the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken.
