HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 5, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team rolled to a 4-0 win over Nazareth College on Saturday afternoon at the De Baun Athletic Complex to open Homecoming Saturday.
With the win, Stevens moves to 8-1-1 overall and 2-0 in the Empire 8. Naz drops to 4-6-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the conference.
The Ducks received a pair of goals from sophomore
Carson Pryor (St. Louis, Mo.) early in the second half to put the game away and saw goalkeepers
Paul Killian (Ellicott City, Md.) and
Brian Schaake (Southbury, Conn.) combine for the team's sixth shutout of the season, accumulating eight saves.
Nazareth had the game's first strong scoring chance, with a one-on-one developing between Golden Flyer forward
Luke Elston (Somerset, England) and Killian. On the play, Killian charged out, slid, and was able to make the save to keep the game scoreless.
From that point on, save for a corner and crossing chance for the guests, Stevens completed dominated the first-half action, pouring in two goals and hammering three posts before it was all said and done.
In the 27th minute, sophomore forward
Joe Cellitti (Mendham, N.J.) rang the bell with a perfect shot from the middle of the Nazareth zone 30-yards out. On the play, Cellitti received a pass, turned and made a couple touches before realizing he was open. He lofted his shot, catching the Nazareth keeper off his line, and stuck it in the upper left corner for the score.
Moments later, sophomore midfielder
Colin Phillips (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) banged a crossbar and post before finding the net with a gorgeous free kick from 19-yards out just off the upper-left-corner of the penalty box.
Stevens came out in the second half as if the game was all even, putting in two goals less than 3:30 in. Pryor netted both with the first coming on the back of a Cellitti through-ball into the left side of the box and the second coming via a header after a corner.
Despite the two or three quality chances for Nazareth, Stevens completely dominated the match, holding possession and forcing the action throughout. The Ducks ended with a 24-11 margin in shots and a 12-2 advantage in corners. Each side was credited with eight saves.
With his two goals today, Pryor now has a team-high seven on the season. Phillips has six and Cellitti has three. Overall Stevens has put up 35 scores in its nine outings, while only allowing five goals against. The Ducks are a plus-55 in shots on goal.
Up next for Stevens is a key non-conference game against perennial national power Swarthmore College. That game is slated for a 7:30 p.m. start Wednesday at the De Baun Athletic Complex and all the action can be seen live at
