BALTIMORE, Md. (February 10, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team placed third at the Eastern Women's Fencing Conference Team Championship in Baltimore Sunday. The Ducks took the epee team title and boasted victories over Yeshiva University, Drew University, Hunter College and the City College of New York.
Stevens was defeated by host Johns Hopkins University who won the EWFC team crown and Haverford College. The scores were 15-12 and 14-13, respectively. The Ducks rolled 26-1 over Yeshiva, 22-5 over Drew and 23-4 over both CCNY and Hunter.
Leading the sabre squad was senior
Juliet Turalski (Maplewood, N.J.) who went 15-1.
Freshman Zoe To (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) was 13-5, while senior
Chelsea Shupe (Montague, N.J.) finished 8-3.
Junior
Briana Nieradka (West Windsor, N.J.) paced the champion epeeists, compiling a mark of 15-1, while senior
Krystal Perkins (Palmdale, Calif.) went 12-4. Freshman
Deanna Quackenbush (Selden, N.Y.) tallied an overall mark of 12-5, with sophomore
Rebecca Merrick (Bayonne, N.J.) turning in a perfect mark of 3-0 as a sub.
In foil, sophomore
Taia Harrison (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) was 11-5, and freshman
Caroleen Chen (Bedminster, N.J.) was 11-3. Senior
Stephanie Arouh (South Brunswick, N.J.) notched a ledger of 6-2, while fellow veteran
Trinity Sheppard (Frederic, Md.) carded a record of 7-1.
Up next for the Ducks will be the EWFC Individual Championships hosted by Stevens on February 17. Highlighting the card will be Nieradka defending her individual epee title from 2012. The meet will serve as both the team's Duck Country event and Senior Day as Turalski, Shupe, Sheppard, Arouh, Perkin,
Paige Cataruozolo (Warren, N.J.) and
Colleen Pelech (Waldwick, N.J.) will be fencing in Hoboken for the final time in their careers.
The day is set to begin at approximately 9 a.m. in the Canavan Arena.
