GETTYSBURG, Pa. (February 9, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team ended its three-match skid with a pair of Centennial Conference victories over Gettysburg College and Washington & Lee University at Gettysburg on Saturday. Stevens is now 7-8 overall on the season and 4-3 in the Centennial.
The Ducks took down the Bullets, 30-18 and then dominated Washington & Lee, 37-6, to complete the sweep.
Against Washington & Lee, all but one wrestler scored a victory for the Ducks. There was no contest at 125-lbs. which meant freshman
Ryan Wilson (McVeytown, Pa.) picked up the first points for Stevens with a 16-7 major decision over Adam Davis at 133.
Junior
Cody Curtiss (Frisco, Texas) then put the Ducks up by nine with a 6-2 decision win over Tyler Kaelin in the 141-lb. bout. Sophomore
Mike Polizzi (Montville, N.J.) recorded his first of two pins on the afternoon in 4:24 against Connor Duffy.
At 157, sophomore
Conner Bass (Westhampton, N.Y.) won by decision, 6-2, against his counterpart Matt Howell. Senior
Joey Favia (Brick, N.J.) also won both bouts by fall in 165-lbs., and took down Zac Richey in 3:00. Favia kicked off a string of four consecutive bouts that ended by fall.
Washington & Lee earned its only points of the match with a fall win at 174 before Stevens added 12 more points with pins by senior
Will Sharkey (Westminster, Md.) and sophomore
Mark Garrity (Stafford, Va.). Sharkey defeated Morgan Moskay in 2:58 at 184, while Garrity triumphed over Connor Smithson in 3:33 at 197. Both grapplers moved up a weight class for their respective matches.
Senior
Brian Schmalz (Colts Neck, N.J.) wrapped up the victory for Stevens with a 3-2 decision in the heavyweight bout over Grant Cokeley.
Against Gettysburg, the Ducks were spotted 18 points with three forfeits by the Bullets. Pins by Polizzi and Favia put the match out of reach despite Gettysburg winning four weight classes, all of which were by decision.
Polizzi topped Eddie Carroll in 1:17 at 149, while Favia defeated Joe Fiore in 2:34. Polizzi is now 21-3 on the season, while Favia is a near perfect 22-1.
Stevens will tangle with the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Valentine's Day in Kings Point, N.Y. for the final Centennial dual of the regular season. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
