HOBOKEN, N.J. (August 31, 2013) – Senior captain Marguerite Chavez (Oceanport, N.J.) converted a penalty stroke with 3:17 to play as the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team earned a come-from-behind 4-3 win over No. 12 The College of New Jersey Saturday at the De Baun Athletic Complex.

The Chavez goal was her second of the game, and the Ducks were able to erase deficits of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 before taking the lead for good in the 67th minute of action.

The win is the first in program history for Stevens over TCNJ and evens the Ducks' record to 1-1 on the year. The Lions fall to 0-1.

It was a see-saw battle from the start, with the Lions jumping on top early behind an unassisted tally from junior forward Erin Healy (Spring Lake Heights. N.J.). Healy was able to track down a pass that was lofted over the Stevens defense by freshman Jaclyn Douglas (Malvern, Pa.), dribble the ball into the circle and angle her shot into the lower-left corner of the goal in the seventh minute.

The Ducks responded, generating several chances before getting a marker off a penalty corner. Chavez inserted to senior back Megan Traub (Berkeley Heights, N.J.). Traub then passed to her right, finding sophomore midfielder Erin Silvestri (Beverly, Mass.), who scored from the top of the circle at the 23:53 mark.

TCNJ regained the lead with just 41 seconds to play in the first when freshman Lexi Smith (Florence, N.J.) was in the right spot at the right time on the left side of the goal following a penalty corner. The ball bounced out to the rookie after a scrum, and she was able to notch the first tally of her career.

The Ducks tied things up (2-2) early in the second when Chavez scored her first of the game. The veteran received a cross at the top of the circle from Silvestri, made a couple slick moves before hammering home her shot.

Less than two minutes later, Smith converted a stroke for her second of the game to give TCNJ a 3-2 margin, but the Ducks again had the answer, this time in the form of senior forward Rachel Chavez (Oceanport, N.J.) who was able to corral a cross from freshman Nolie Prouty (Glendora, Calif.) in traffic and score with a backhanded shot. It was the first goal of the year for her and first career point for Prouty.

After tying the score at 3-3, Stevens took hold of the momentum, generating shot after shot and penalty corner after penalty corner. The Ducks kept fighting, eventually getting the stroke chance and winning the game.

The triumph marks the first win over a ranked opponent since November 10, 2010 for Stevens. The Ducks had been 0-9 vs. those in the NFHCA Top-20 over that span, always playing one of the tougher schedules in the nation.

Freshman goalkeeper Emily Stukenborg (Stockholm, N.J.) earned her first win in goal for the Ducks, making six saves. The Ducks recorded seven stops in total thanks to a key defensive save by senior back Grace Ridge (Moorestown, N.J.).

Stevens ended the game with a 19-16 margin in shots, including a 17-4 edge in what turned out to be a dominant second-half performance. The Ducks also finished with a slim 16-15 advantage in penalty corners.

Marguerite Chavez led Stevens with four points (two goals), while Silvestri had three (one goal, one assist).

Stevens will return to action when it hosts Kean University on September 7 at 5 p.m. All the action will be webcast live at www.Empire8.TV.
