HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 14, 2013) – Senior forward Marguerite Chavez (Oceanport, N.J.) tallied her 100th career point in what turned out to be a five-point performance, senior back Megan Traub (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) recorded a hat trick, and the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team rolled to a 5-1 win over Washington & Jefferson College in the Empire 8 opener for both teams Saturday at the De Baun Athletic Complex.

With the win, the Ducks improve to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the Empire 8.

Chavez tallied her 100th point at 20:38 of the first half, recording her second assist in less than seven minutes. The senior inserted to Traub on a penalty corner, who controlled and hammered home her second goal of the game.

Stevens took the lead 5:50 in and never looked back when Traub received a Chavez insert and tapped to sophomore midfielder Erin Silvestri (Beverly, Mass.) 12-yards out. Silvestri then put in her second goal of the year. In the 14th minute, Traub scored her first of the season thanks to a Chavez insert for a 2-0 lead.

The third goal looked exactly like the second and score number four was similar to numbers two and three. Chavez inserted to Traub who wound up for a big shot and put it in for her third marker in less than nine minutes of game time. The senior captains, who consistently hooked up last year in an extremely effective offensive penalty corner game, got it going in Saturday's tilt after struggling to finish in the season's first three contests.

W&J (4-2, 0-1 Empire 8) was able to get on the board in the 55th minute, but the Ducks responded 6:39 later when Chavez scored her third goal of the season thanks to an assist from freshman forward Taylor Welch (Ringwood, N.J.).

Freshman Emily Stukenborg (Stockholm, N.J.) earned the win in goal for Stevens. Stukenborg gave way to sophomore Felicia Heard (Lebanon, N.J.) in the second half who made a pair of saves.

Stevens ended with a 15-12 advantage in shots and a 13-5 margin in penalty corners.

Traub's seven points in a single game is the second-most in Stevens history, while Chavez's three assists tie an all-time record. Chavez also now has 103 career points which is the second most in the program record book.

Stevens will return to action at FDU-Florham September 18 at 7 p.m. It will be the team's first road test of the year.
