Women’s Volleyball Stays Perfect vs. FDU and Kean

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 14, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team completed a perfect weekend at the 2013 Ducks Classic in Canavan Arena on Saturday afternoon with victories over FDU-Florham and Kean University. Stevens pushes its record to 12-0 on the season and only dropped two sets this weekend.

Stevens 3, FDU-Florham 0

The Ducks swept FDU in their first match of the day, 25-16, 25-16, 25-22. Stevens defeated the Devils earlier this season in four sets and were led in this match by freshman Mary Tobin (Boothwyn, Pa) who tallied a match-best 16 kills on 41 attempts with seven digs and three assists.

Senior Mary Caulson (West Islip, N.Y.) hit at a .400 clip in the match with 11 kills on 25 swings. Caulson also added a match-high two service aces to go along with five digs. Junior Ashley Castillo (Cresskill, N.J.) handed out 26 assists in two sets and chipped in five digs and two kills.

Junior Katie Hall (Midlothian, Va.) put down seven kills on 10 tries with one error for a .600 hitting percentage and also tallied five total blocks. Classmate Kirsten Salmins (Wyckoff, N.J.) paced the Ducks on the backline with 14 digs and a kill.

Senior Samantha Gates (Wilmington, N.C.) dished out 10 assists in one set with five digs, while freshman Christina Sciarra (Montclair, N.J.) contributed four kills and three blocks.

Stevens hit .291 in the match and committed just 12 hitting errors. The team also combined for seven total blocks and four aces. In sets one and two, the Ducks hit .333 and .448, respectively.

Stevens 3, Kean 1

In a battle of undefeated teams, Stevens took down Kean (8-1), 26-24, 23-25, 25-17, 25-19, in the final match of the tournament. The Ducks capitalized in the match on 11 aces and 14 service errors from the Cougars and also recorded nine more kills than Kean (51 to 42).

Tobin led all players with 15 kills en route to being named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. She also recorded eight digs, and in the three matches, Tobin tallied 43 kills and 27 digs over 11 sets.

Gates, an all-tournament selection, dished out 41 more helpers for a total of 99 over the weekend. She would also add 10 digs and two kills against Kean. Salmins, the third member from Stevens to make the all-tournament team, posted a match-high 27 digs.

Caulson picked up a double-double with 13 kills and 14 digs and added three aces, while Hall put down eight kills with four aces. Hall also led the Ducks with three blocks.

In the lone loss of the match to Kean, the Ducks trailed, 16-9, in set two but stormed back to knot the set at 16-16. The Cougars mounted a run of their own to take a 21-17 edge only to watch Stevens come right back with five of the next six points for another tie at 22-22. The Ducks then went up, 23-22, but Kean ran off the final three points for the win.

In all, there were 24 ties and 12 lead changes in the match.

Stevens hosts SUNY New Paltz on September 18 at 7 p.m. for its fourth consecutive home match. The Ducks will then head to Hartwick College for the first Empire 8 Conference crossover on the 20th and 21st for three contests.
