Highlights

ONEONTA, N.Y. (September 21, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team scored five goals for the second time in three outings to defeat host Hartwick College 5-4 Saturday in Oneonta, N.Y.

With the win, Stevens improves to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the Empire 8. Hartwick drops to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

Despite controlling the stats sheet with monstrous advantages in shots (27-8) and corners (24-6), Stevens needed each and every one of its five scores.

Sophomore forward Dailyn Brook (Cherry Hill, N.J.) started the scoring at the 8:26 mark, tallying on the back of an assist from senior forward Marguerite Chavez (Oceanport, N.J.).

Hartwick answered in the 22nd minute, but senior back Grace Ridge (Moorestown, N.J.) sent the Ducks into the intermission with a 2-1 lead, scoring her second goal of the year with 1:28 left in the first period. On the play, senior back Katie Achilles (Portsmouth, N.H.) took a free hit on the right side and found Ridge. Ridge controlled, saw that she was open and pushed her shot in for the score.

The Hawks came out firing in the second, scoring 31 seconds into the half and again 5:08 later. Despite the deficit, the Ducks got back on track, generating a couple chances and nearly tying the score via a penalty stroke. Marguerite Chavez was denied on the stroke attempt, but quickly redeemed herself to tie the score at three with less than 19 minutes left. Senior forward Rachel Chavez (Oceanport, N.J.) took the ball deep in the Hawk zone, crossing from the right end line to her sister Marguerite who notched her fourth goal of the season.

Stevens took the lead for good 1:30 later when Marguerite Chavez inserted to senior back Megan Traub (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) on a penalty corner, and Traub banged home her fifth of the season.

Freshman forward Taylor Welch (Ringwood, N.J.) gave Stevens some breathing room with 2:14 on the clock, getting the first of her career when she one-timed a cross from senior midfielder Chelsea Cresci (Wilmington, Del) from in close on the left side of the goal.

Marguerite Chavez led Stevens with four points (one goal, two assists) as five different Ducks scored on the afternoon. Four different players pocketed assists as well. Freshman Emily Stukenborg (Stockholm, N.J.) earned the win in goal for Stevens, making four saves.

Since a 3-0 shutout at the hands of Kean University on September 7, the Ducks have scored 12 goals, while only giving up six. They are 3-0 over that span, earning two conference wins, two road wins and an overtime victory.

Stevens will return to action Wednesday night when it hosts Cabrini College at 5 p.m. at the De Baun Athletic Complex. All the action can be seen live at www.Empire8.TV.
