Swarthmore, Pa. – The No. 8 Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team was nipped 1-0 by Swarthmore in a non-conference defensive struggle on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Less than five minutes in, the Garnet converted off their second penalty corner, then had a chance to double their lead just over five minutes later, but sailed a penalty stroke wide left of the cage. The Ducks had a penalty corner prior to the Swarthmore penalty stroke but could not get off a shot attempt.
Two and a half minutes into the second quarter, junior goalkeeper
Natalie Ward got just enough of a shot to send it off the post, After the two sides struggled to break through each other's defenses for the next 10 minutes, Ward made a point-blank save off a 2-on-1 opportunity for Swarthmore, keeping the deficit just a single goal heading to the half.
Stevens (3-1) did not record a shot in the first 30 minutes, but found opportunities in the second half. First, just past five minutes gone in the third, senior
Sophia Cozza re-directed a cross in front off the stick of junior
Ava Pelletier, but Swarthmore goalie Josie Sarno made the stop.
In the fourth quarter, first-year
Jenna Mayer found space through the wickets of Sarno in front of cage that had equalizer written all over it, but Sarno managed to get back and at the last second, bat the attempt away. Mayer had another shot attempt 90 seconds later, but Sarno also kicked that one away from cage.
Senior
Taylor Brooks had a shot off a penalty corner with just under five minutes left, but Sarno got her pad on it, denying what was ultimately the final shot of the game for either side.
