ELMIRA, N.Y. (October 11, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team improved to 3-2 in the Empire 8 with a 3-1 conference road win at Elmira College Saturday afternoon.
The Ducks scored three first-half goals en route to the win, improving to 6-8 overall. Elmira fell to 1-10 overall and 0-5 in the conference.
Stevens scored all its goals over a span of 5:52 of game time and before 10 minutes had elapsed in the game.
The first was scored by junior back
Angela Bauroth (Rockville, Md.), getting the first goal of her career at 3:45. The play began with a penalty corner and ended when a rebound found Bauroth off the right side. The junior controlled and buried her shot in the left corner to give the Ducks the lead for good.
Freshman
Victoria Alvarez (Pine Beach, N.J.) made it 2-0 3:13 later with the play also originating via a penalty corner. Freshman
Haines Duff (New Bedford, Mass.) received a pass at the top of the circle before finding Alvarez in front for the score. It was the 13th goal of the year for Alvarez and the first assist of Duff's young career.
Stevens' final score of the game was similar to the first two in that it originated on a penalty corner. After the ball was tossed in front, a scrum ensued and it eventually popped out to Alvarez on the left side. The rookie was able to find sophomore forward
Taylor Welch (Ringwood, N.J.) off the left post who then lifted her shot in for her ninth goal of the season.
Stevens dominated the action from start-to-finish despite allowing a goal midway through the second half. Sophomore goalkeeper
Emily Stukenborg (Stockholm, N.J.) made six saves to earn the win between the pipes for the Ducks.
Stevens ended with a 19-10 margin in shots and a 16-7 lead in penalty corners. Fourteen of the Ducks' 19 shots were on goal.
