Overtime Goal Lifts Men’s Soccer

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (October 15, 2014) – Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer junior Joe Cellitti scored in the 101st minute Wednesday night to lead the Ducks to a 3-2, double overtime win over the Merchant Marine Academy.

The win moves Stevens' record to 9-3-1, while Merchant Marine dropped to 7-7-1.

Merchant Marine struck first with a goal in the 30th minute off a goal from sophomore Tim Hughes, but Stevens bounced back with the equalizer five minutes later.

Off a corner kick from sophomore Patrick Masur in the 35th minute, Cellitti headed the ball past lunging Merchant Marine sophomore Cory Maier for the score. The goal was Cellitti's fifth goal of the season while Masur picked up his third assist.

The Mariners attempted an answer with shots in the 37th, 40th, and 43rd minutes, but two went wide before sophomore goalie Mike Renna made a save on the third to send the game into the half deadlocked.

The Ducks turned up the pressure after the break, quickly leading to the go ahead goal in the 49th minute. 15 yards out, junior Colin Phillips unleashed a rocket that flew past Maier for the goal. Junior Keith Gillette was credited with the assist in what was the third goal of the season for Phillips.

The goal held up over the next 30+ minutes before Merchant Marine tied things up in the 84th minute with a goal from senior Alex Maney, sending the game into overtime. The Ducks had chances in the 91st and 94th minutes, but Maier made the save on the first before the second bounced off the crossbar to send the game to a second overtime.

Once there, Stevens wasted no time getting the game winner after Cellitti came away with the ball after a scuffle in front of the goal. The scrum put Maier out of position, leaving an open net for the Stevens junior to clinch the win.

Renna made four saves in goal to extend the Ducks' unbeaten streak to eight.

The Ducks will continue their road schedule Saturday when they head to Houghton College for a 1 p.m. match with the Highlanders. Check stevensducks.com after the game for box score and recap.
