ONEONTA, N.Y. (October 17, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team began the Hartwick College Invitational with a three-set victory over SUNY Brockport on Friday evening in Oneonta, N.Y.
With the win, Stevens is now 21-4 overall, while Brockport falls to 15-8.
The Ducks swept the match with set scores of 25-20, 25-15, 25-22, and outhit Brockport, .265 to .098. Stevens notched 16 more kills – 41 to 25 – than the Golden Eagles and committed one less hitting error – 14 to 15. Stevens also benefitted from 11 blocking errors from Brockport.
Sophomore
Mary Tobin (Boothwyn, Pa.) registered a match-high 15 kills to go along with 12 digs for a double-double and swung at a .393 clip.
Senior
Katie Hall (Midlothian, Va.) and freshman
Brianna Evans (Spokane, Wash.) each hit over .430 on the evening. Hall recorded seven kills on 13 swings with one error for a .462 hitting percentage, while Evans notched nine kills on 16 attempts and two errors to hit .438. Hall also added three blocks, three digs and two service aces. Evans posted 11 digs.
Fellow senior
Ashley Castillo (Cresskill, N.J.) dished out 37 assists to lead all players and chipped in five digs, while freshman
Sydni Horner (Columbia, Md.) set a match-high with 13 digs.
Sophomore
Christina Sciarra (Montclair, N.J.) chipped in six kills with two aces for the Ducks.
Stevens plays two matches tomorrow at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. The Ducks begin the day against SUNY Oswego and wrap up the tournament versus St. Lawrence University.
