ONEONTA, N.Y. (October 18, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team completed a perfect weekend to win the Hartwick College Invitational with a pair of victories over SUNY Oswego and St. Lawrence University on Saturday.
Stevens (23-4) swept both counterparts on the afternoon to secure the 3-0 weekend in Oneonta, N.Y. The Ducks opened against Oswego and took down the Lakers, 25-18, 25-18, 25-19, and then blanked St. Lawrence, 25-18, 25-16, 25-20. The past seven triumphs for Stevens have all been sweeps.
Sophomore
Mary Tobin (Boothwyn, Pa.) was named the Invitational's Most Valuable Player and freshman
Brianna Evans (Spokane, Wash.) landed on the All-Tournament Team.
Stevens 3, Oswego 0 In the opener, the Ducks hit .237 as a team and tallied 13 service aces. On the other side, Oswego was held to just a .094 hitting percentage – 23 kills, 14 errors, 96 attempts.
Tobin and junior
Annemarie Thomas (Durham, N.C.) each tallied 10 kills to lead all players. Tobin swung at a .391 clip to go along with 13 digs, while Thomas hit .364 with three blocks.
Junior
Becca Youngman (Rochester, N.Y.) was next in line in kills with eight and added five digs. Senior
Ashley Castillo (Cresskill, N.J.) dished out a match-best 30 assists and registered 13 digs with two blocks (one solo).
Sophomore
Christina Sciarra (Montclair, N.J.) recorded a majority of the team's 13 aces with seven to her credit, while freshman
Sydni Horner (Columbia, Md.) contributed 12 digs.
Junior
Catie Shelton (Central Square, N.Y.) notched six digs and senior
Katie Hall (Midlothian, Va.) added four digs, two aces and two kills.
Stevens 3, St. Lawrence 0The Ducks once again benefitted from a struggling offense by their opponent, as the Saints committed 23 attack errors and hit .070. A contributing factor to that was the stellar defensive play at the net by Stevens, who tallied nine total blocks, including six solo.
Tobin was once again the team's top offensive threat, putting down 11 kills with nine digs. Thomas ranked second on the team with six kills to complete her day.
Sciarra filled the stat sheet with four kills, three digs, three blocks (two solo) and two aces, while Hall had four kills and four total blocks.
Evans added seven digs, three blocks (two solo), three kills and an ace. Castillo controlled the offense with another match-high 24 assists.
Horner finished the match with a player-high 14 digs.
Stevens squares off with some tough competition over the next week, all on the road. The Ducks start with New York University on October 22, then travel to Utica College for an Empire 8 Conference match on the 24th, and wrap up the road trip with a crucial conference tri-match against Nazareth College and Ithaca College.
The team to come away with the best record in that tri-match will host the Empire 8 Championship on November 7-8.
