Astel Leads Women’s Basketball To First Win Of The Season

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. (November 16, 2014) – Behind an 18 point, eight rebound performance from junior Kaitlyn Astel, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team picked up a 63-54 win over Arcadia Univeristy Sunday in the DeSales Tip Off.

The win evens Stevens' record at 1-1 while Arcadia dropped to 0-2.

The Ducks raced out to an early 7-1 lead thanks to a pair of field goals from Astel and a three pointer from sophomore Daphne Ginn. Arcadia came back with an 11-0 run to take the lead, but a three from sophomore Erica Guketlov with seven and a half minutes left in the half knotted the game at 14.

The game turned into a back-and-forth battle for the next four minutes with neither team able to get up by more than three until the two minute mark.

After Astel's layup made it 22-19, junior Miranda Ripken followed with a layup of her own to make it 24-19. Aracadia answered with a 5-0 run to tie the score, but Astel's jumper with just under a minute remaining gave the Ducks the two point edge they would take into the break.

Stevens came out hot to start the second half with an 8-0 run led by four points from sophomore Hannah Brophy. Arcadia responded with four unanswered, but a Ripken jumper followed by a Brophy layup extended the Ducks lead back to 10.

The Ducks offense continued to pour it on over the next several minutes before Astel hit jumpers on back-to-back possessions to make it 51-34 midway through the half.

Arcadia answered again and made it a six point game with just under four minutes remaining, but a Guketlov three followed by an Astel jumper ballooned the lead back to 11. From there, the Ducks held off another late Acardia rally to hold on for the 63-54 win.

Astel's 18 points led all scorers while junior Dylan Krause led the Ducks with 12 rebounds. For the second straight day, the Ducks outrebounded their opposition, this time by a 43-37 margin.

The Ducks will return to the court on Nov. 22 at 1 p.m. against Brooklyn College in their home opener.
