WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (February 19, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team saw its three-match winning streak snapped at Lycoming College Wednesday night by a score of 24-15.
The Ducks were able to turn a 12-6 deficit into a 15-12 lead with two bouts remaining, but the hosts earned 12 points in the final two matchups of the night for the win.
Stevens drops to 11-8 overall in defeat, while the Warriors improve to 13-8.
Freshman
Rob Murray opened the dual with a 5-0 decision over Jake Witmer to give Stevens the lead, but Lycoming earned victories at 133 and 141 to open a 6-3 margin heading into 149. Junior
Mike Polizzi picked up an 8-7 decision at 149 pounds as the fourth-ranked 149-pounder in the nation has now won 15-straight bouts.
After Polizzi tied the score for Stevens, Lycoming picked up two-straight wins at 157 and 165 to open a 12-6 margin with four matchups remaining. Junior
Zach Bass tied things at 12 with a big-time fall at 174, pinning Matthew Neff at 2:15 of the first period.
Senior
Ryan Dormann gave the Ducks a 15-12 margin with two bouts left, earning a 3-1 decision over Greg Wetzel at 184, but Lycoming picked up wins by fall at 197 and 285 to take the 24-15 victory.
The Ducks will return to the mats at the Centennial Conference Championships on Saturday, February 22. The event will be hosted by Ursinus College.
